It might as well be Harry Potter’s invisible Knight Bus, because no one can prove it exists.

The bus has been repeatedly cited by True the Vote, a national group focused on voter fraud. Catherine Engelbrecht, the group’s leader, told a gathering in July about buses carrying dozens of voters showing up at polling places during the recent Wisconsin recall election.

“Magically, all of them needed to register and vote at the same time,” Ms. Engelbrecht said. “Do you think maybe they registered falsely under false pretenses? Probably so.”

Weeks later, another True the Vote representative told a meeting of conservative women about a bus seen at a San Diego polling place in 2010 offloading people “who did not appear to be from this country.”

Officials in both San Diego and Wisconsin said they had no evidence that the buses were real. “It’s so stealthy that no one is ever able to get a picture and no one is able to get a license plate,” said Reid Magney, a spokesman for the Wisconsin agency that oversees elections. In some versions the bus is from an Indian reservation; in others it is full of voters from Chicago or Detroit. “Pick your minority group,” he said.

The buses are part of the election fraud gospel according to True the Vote, which is mobilizing a small army of volunteers to combat what it sees as a force out to subvert elections. Ms. Engelbrecht’s July speech in Montana was titled “Voter Fraud: The Plot to Undermine American Democracy.”

Yeah, I was listening to it thinking, "Is he going to get to his point sometime soon?". And then his big point ends up being that we have it great in America? A two-minute story to remind people who paid $50,000 each for lunch how lucky they are to be in America? Thanks, Captain Obvious.

He wasn't reminding them about how lucky they are to be American. He was reminding his fellow rich folks that they have every right to be disdainful of the ungrateful, unwashed 47% who should shut up, get off the dole, pull themselves up by the bootstraps, and not expect any help. Making minorities into scapegoats unfortunately still has political resonance.

2 things...slyly saying if he wasnt born in this country he'd have a shot much like our current prez, and also saying that you know how those minorities do, voting for each other.

Yeah but then he'd be poor, so he wouldn't even be in the race.

Hey, sometimes even I think that the only way a black Democrat got elected President in this country is by invisible black people voting.

those liberal bastards at the brookings institute broke down who paid what and what tax credits they received. it's eye-opening to see who romney calls a 'taker'.

A cache of hidden-camera videos of Mitt Romney, speaking at an off-the-record fundraiser sometime in the last few months, has emerged on YouTube and Mother Jones. Among other things, Romney claims that "47 percent of people will vote for [Obama] no matter what" because they "believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing," and that "it would be helpful to be Latino." The upshot: Mitt Romney in private is exactly the kind of entitled blowhard that you'd imagine based on his public persona.

I still don't think this 47% thing is that big of a deal. I mean, it's costing Romney a couple of days in the news cycle, and inasmuch as this helps Obama run out the clock, it's bad for Romney (if we take it as read that Romney is currently trailing).

But in terms of changing hearts and minds? The people simply who were going to vote for Romney identify "Democrats" as "minorities" and "free loaders," never thinking of their old, white, medicare-using, social security check-receiving themselves that way, and so when they hear that Romney called Obama voters bunch of free-loading whiners, they think he's a latter-day Alexander Solchenizyn, speaking truth to power.

This could be used to fire up Obama's base perhaps, but I think that is the limit of its staying power.

Damn straight

He was making the point that working conditions in China are awful compared to what we're used to in America and people were tripping over themselves to fill the rare openings because the work/pay were still better than anything else they could get. People in the US have a massive advantage over the rest of the world just by virtue of being born here and not in a country where those conditions were the norm. What an asshole, right?

The politics aside, it would be nice if this brouhaha pushed us toward a realization of the BLINDINGLY OBVIOUS truth that the relationship between individual and government is always, always more complicated than giver/taker and that there's a transactional element to most decision.

The soldier in active service probably is motivated by self-interest--chance to add skills, healthcare through the VA, education supports etc--as well as patriotism. (This is why Patrick Tillman was such a hero.) We put into Social Security and Medicare up front with the expectation that we'll benefit on the back end. We pay taxes for defense, roads, sanitation, public safety, schools, et al. Businesses take out loans and utilize tax incentives that are offered in hopes of helping to create economic value. Call it the Invisible Helping Hand.

Everyone gives, everyone takes. You hope for responsible choices on both ends and a sum greater than the whole of the parts, which strikes me as a good working definition of community. This is very basic social contract stuff, and the Romney/Ryan crowd either just doesn't get it or won't acknowledge it.

Obama should have said "You didn't build that all by yourself"; nobody does, and nobody should have to.
