Not sure I agree, but if true it would have meant a very different storyline today. And it's an interesting argument which of them would be stronger vs. Obama in the general.
Here is my logic, Virginia has become home to the most radical of the right. The tidewater area and DC suburbs have moderated things a bit, but heading toward the piedmont in western loudoun and south is all extreme right wing of the Santorum ilk. We have two religiously active universities in Patrick Henry (ironic) and Liberty that are thriving. This is sort of ground zero in a perceived war between secularism and religiosity, or as "they" put it between wrong and right. .
