The Republican despair is easy enough to explain:

1) It's generally believed that because of baggage, ideology or both, no non-Romney can win
2) But to get nominated, Romney's had to go too far right (see: anti-contraception) and go negative, tanking his favorability
3) He's also just not a very good politician, committing a seemingly endless sequence of unforced errors all of which reinforce an existing negative perception of him (unprincipled, out of touch rich dude)
4) The economy seems to be getting better

Some, maybe most, candidates improve with practice, though after six years running for president Romney might be as good as he'll get. Either way, at this point I think it'll take one or more disasters for Obama to lose. But that's entirely plausible.

I like the economy improving, but I think I'd rather have waited a couple months for this push. Still time for it to stall out. And let's say we buy in to all the stuff about it not being the actual number but the trend with regards to unemployment then if you believe the number's gonna be somewhere between 7.8-8.3%, then it's probably not good for the number to just sort of bounce around between 7.8 and 8.0 from July to November.

Obama phoned the Georgetown student Limbaugh called a slut, thanking her for speaking out.

jersyHOYA needs to chime in on the quality of sex at that orgy on the Potomac. Its his place so he should know best. That said, I don't see him in the Rush Ranks no matter his political slant.

Obama was trying the Clinton route making that cross town call. ;)

How bloody stupid is Limbaugh. Who can/will take him seriously, even a little bit with his stupidity? Maybe the good people of Indiana where their elected officials see Girl Scouts as a radical, homosexual incubator promoting abortions.

If you missed it:

Feb 22: Undaunted by ridicule from the leader of his own party, an Indiana lawmaker is standing by his allegations that the Girl Scouts is a radical organization that promotes abortions and homosexuality.

I predict that Romney takes VA, especially since Paul will not take a social stance making him a shoe in. *

It makes her a slut, right? It makes her a prostitute. She wants to be paid to have sex. She's having so much sex, she can't afford the contraception. She wants you and me and the taxpayers to pay her to have sex. What does that make us? We're the pimps. The johns. That's right. We would be the johns. No! ... Pimp's not the right word. Okay, so she's not a slut. She's round-heeled. I take it back.

Daily Kos is running an e-mail campaign to pressure Limbaugh's advertisers to drop him. This never works, right? Probably, but if the e-mail I got is to be believed, one advertiser already has backed out.

Considering one of the candidates is George Allen, Hank has my full support.

Is this another "blame moderates for the loss" cycle? Or is it just a party that has embraced a sort of weird dark not quite real universe?

You live in the deep south more or less, right? So I'm guessing you hear very little pro-Obama commentary. I live in Maryland, and I hear very little positive commentary about this Republican presidential field. That said, both of our views are somewhat skewed.

Still, I believe Obama's reelection chances are more in the 67-75% range right now.

I don't really pay attention to local political coverage, and avoid discussing politics with most of my neighbors. My position is more like this: http://www.realclearpolitics.com/articl ... 13333.html

I honestly don't hear much enthusiasm for any of the Republicans either. But I think the defeatism really is a somewhat orchestrated attempt by the far right to blame moderates for the loss and thus consolidate the right wing hold on the Republican party. In part, I think these right wing true believers really believe a moderate can't win, and that accounts for a lot of the malaise here.
