it's kind of strange how that argument doesn't seem to hold much traction with people who dislike sports

the counter arguments are always hilariously transparent.

The idea of a marriage in a church is kinda cool despite my hatred of the Catholic Church, but apparently have to attend some #$!&@ ass weekend camp to validate we're cool in the eyes of the church? Plus they want letters of recommendation? This is such garbage.

A whole weekend? I know it's been awhile, but for us it was like 1 hour... filled out some form, some guy talked for a couple of minutes, then they gave every couple a folder with a couple of pamphlets and the certificate. I think they even had free cupcakes and cookies.

You've actually participated in such an argument? The only time it comes up at our house is if I'm watching a baseball game and Mrs. Vulture will ask when it will be over and I exclaim, "It's baseball! No one knows when it will be over. That's the best part!"
Also, at several points during the season and even into the playoffs she'll ask "How are they doing?" and I say "First Place!" or "They're in the playoffs again!" I don't think she wants anymore detail than that.

I used to get into conversations (I hesitate to call them arguments because I really don't care about converting some artiste) about the worthiness of watching sports with some regularity, particularly when I lived with two Tyler grad students who really had their heads up their asses about what was and wasn't sophisticated enough to spend time on.

I might be having a flight of fancy here, but I think there's kind of been a sea change over the past 5-10 years regarding just how openly we engage our nerdier proclivities. I think in 2005 I might have downplayed my interests in sports, comic books, video games, pop music, action movies, etc. but now an open engagement with them seems encouraged. I blame the Faint

I sure I didn't explain myself so well.

like, I watched the Super Bowl with a bunch of people who work at Urban Outfitters. there wasn't a lot of room in our jeans, you know? when the commercial for the Avengers came on, most of us shared our enthusiasm and the ones who didn't didn't roll their eyes. things like that feel sort of surprising to me sometimes, like they wouldn't have happened when I was first out of college

i've always hung out mostly with nerds, but it does seem that nerdery in general has become more acceptable over the last few years. or maybe it's just the company i keep.

Going back to the carrot discussion we had the other day, I came across this article in my Instapaper account, I read it a few months ago and it was pretty interesting. If anyone's interested, I figured I'd share.

I wonder if you can do that with other vegetables. Broccoli might be a candidate. Edame might be another.
