Most Catholic universities and hospitals already do it and a majority of states already require. This is just politics because the numbers started getting better economically.

Citizens United continues to be relevant:

The clip above was posted at Fox Nation. You'll just have to read the comments there for yourself - a few thousand words make a picture, etc

If we're talking about books and music, it's not like mom and pop stores have been a real option there for most people for a long time, particularly for books. And as far as textbooks go, Follet is far more evil than Amazon.

Don't get me wrong, I hear what you're saying... I just don't see the slippery slope here.

No, Walmart isn't leading to the death of the TV "industry" if you mean, are company owners and stockholders still making money hand over fist? But it's certainly destroyed the local electronics store who used to each support a handful of families on a reasonable wage.

SPEAKING OF Citizens United, I read this Dan Abrams piece and thought it was a useful corrective on some of the media's serial misappropriation of blame of campaign spending issues to the decision. Although the one thing I think he gets a bit wrong is Citizens United did open the door for unlimited contributions to PACs specifically, while the ability to donate unlimited funds to things like 501c4s and 527s long predated Citizens United.

Also I had no idea he was Floyd Abrams son.

Well, sort of. Bestbuy, Costco, Sears, Tiger Direct, J&R and on and on contributed. But if you want to buy a TV from a local store, we have a furniture/appliance store you can use. And they compete pretty effectively with Wal-Mart.

I'm just trying to change my own behavior by forgoing a little convenience now so that I don't feel like a complete hyprocrite when Education Management Corporation takes over my library, cuts my already paltry pay, gives me no benefits, and maybe makes me sign a no-compete contract just for laughs

I guess that's a little dramatic

Wow, I also had no idea that he was Floyd's son (for those who don't know, Floyd Abrams is probably the most famous First Amendment lawyer out there.

I quite agree. Don't get me wrong. But the local businesses also need to step up their game in order to compete. It's easier to see in a small town--we had 3 independent hardware stores, but Wal-Mart knocked out two of them. But the one that's left is far and away the best of the lot, and that's where most people go. The staff is knowledgeable and beat the crap out of Wal-Mart on quality and selection. Maybe Wal-Mart wins on price, but I they don't win on value. I do wish they'd stay open on Saturday afternoon though.

So, while I'm deciding whether or not to become an Episcopalian, is it okay if I use the Amazon gift card I got for Christmas?

Congressman Steve King (R - IA?) has a shaky grasp of biology. He just asserted on some show that he believes the Pill aborts unborn babies

chinese twitters apparently lit up with reports that kim jung un was assassinated in beijing today. nothing confirmed yet, so it's most likely BS, but who knows.
