i jsut read something in the times about how we're the only culture that looks down on people living with their parents at this age. every other culture looks at it as a logical step to saving up for houses and the like.

not saying i agree with it, but i do think there are plenty of ways to save money without moving back. That commute is going to suck, ruins happy hours b/c you're thinking of when the next train is, and is too expensive

Yeah my co-worker is first-generation Greek and is 34, lives at home and just got engaged and it's totally not weird at all for him.

I am in agreement with trent and jeff that I should probably just step up, but two points

1. I would save a TON of money. it wouldn't be a pittance. rent, utilities, food...

2. There would be a predetermined end point, because I am going to get a job at some point. I think. Hopefully.

Houshphandzadeh can sleep on my couch like the guy in half baked.

I wouldn't move. You'd still go out as much as you do now so the savings wouldn't be there. You'd just end up miserable.

The drug thing just means you need togang out with friends who don't do them. Guilt will eventually hit and you'd quit all together.

Good luck man

I think if you go into it with a precise goal, it could work.

First off, more and more people are living with their parents later on especially in this economy. So it's nothing to feel bad about. It's just you can't help but notice there aren't that much savings in Housh's plan that don't come from discipline. Basically after commuting and utilities he's factoring in, he's saving 250 dollars a month? That's 3 grand a year, which is not insignificant, but I think most adults would gladly trade 3 grand for the chance to live independently.

What I find interesting, but perhaps it's more because I'm just not the social butterfly housh is and he doesn't value these things, is that he's ALREADY exhibiting discipline about some things - he's cool living in a 500 dollar apt with no cable. I could never do that but he's made those sacrifices in order to do that. The "problem" is that he makes those sacrifices so that he can drink more often. But some people would be doing that while also going into debt so they could have a nicer place.

Oh also, now that I have kids I watch a lot more tv at night. It's not as good as going out, but whatever. Would getting cable provide you with more fun alternatives at home so you didn't have to go to a bar just to watch the Phils/Sixers/Eagles?

that actually would help some. and I know I'm admitting my patheticness here, but I would love to just wake up on Sunday and watch the game with an orange juice and a sandwich. I pretty much have to go to the bar or a small party

and quitting either the Eagles, Phillies, or Sixers is NOT an option. at all

Moving home for a year before grad school was pretty clutch for me so I could have enough $$ to buy a car and have some money in the bank when school started. But what Trent said also has the ring of truth.

When is the lease up on your apartment? And do you think you'd really find a better job within 6-12 months? The grad school thing was perfect because I knew I was gone within a year no doubt about it. Moving home without a guaranteed exit date seems like a possible disaster.

I think so, yeah. I'm about 0-15 so far but I've been pretty scatterbrained with my applying

and I've lowered my standards to any town bigger than Twin Peaks

If you're looking at moving to someplace random within the next year, you're probably going to need to buy a car and moving itself costs money. Depending on the conventions of the area, a new apartment might take some investment furniture wise. All points in favor of going home and getting a few grand in the bank.

Also, perhaps your parents are super sleuths or whatever but, is relying on your parents to curb your use of illicit substances really going to work? That doesn't seem to work in the case of most high school kids who find a way to both drink and smoke and you have a built in crutch of actually being legally able to drink.

My thought is that if you want to drink/smoke, you're going to drink/smoke.

I really shouldn't have said that was a big part of it, because it's really not. It's more just that I need a divorce from my current group of friends. I know for a lot of you guys it would be easy, but for me it's not.

I love living w the parents at the moment (it's more culturally acceptable for me too, perks of being an illegal), but never being able to bring anyone back and always worrying about having to drive home after a fun night can get pretty frustrating.

But I stay pretty busy since starting this new job so life is p good right now.
