Last year when I was out in the Silicon Valley area, a co-worker and I walked into a bar that had 4 people in it.....the owner and his wife, her sister, and a drunk old guy celebrating his birthday. He pointed over to the bowl of chips and a store-bought cake sitting on the pool table, offered us food after we had been flying for 8 hours, and introduced himself as "Blue Balls Jimmy". After finishing our beers in about 30 seconds, we got the fuck outta there pretty fast

I think that a lotta times when someone is talking about Irony, what they're talking about isn't really Irony. It might be Sarcasm or Satire or even just plain Sardonic.

Before the internets, we learned in school that O Henry (the writer not the candy bar) was always using irony. That's the guy we read when we were learning about Irony. So when I hear that something is ironic, I ax myself: "Does that seem like something O Henry might have written?"

If not, then it isn't irony.

They tried to teach us abstinence in school too. Instead of trying to get into a chicks pants during the latter part of a date, you were supposed to do something wholesome. I remember one of the wholesome activities was "raiding the refrigerator."

I said I couldn't do that because I was a Catholic and we didn't believe in pre-marital snacks.
