On-line Algonquin Round Table (AKA Random Thoughts)

I haven't been to a Chili's in about five years. The one somewhat near my house has a Panera Bread and a Nifty Fifties next to it, so I usually opt for one of those.

Meh. I can think of five different bars off the top of my head that have dollar draughts.

I think my stupid high school girlfriend opted for Bennigan's and got the chicken fingers (the appetizer) every single time we went out

Wikipedia led me to this about a related, but different pepper:

The Trinidad Scorpion Butch T pepper is so strong that those who handle it must wear protective gloves. Exposure to the eye or skin near the eyes when handling this pepper could cause temporary blindness. While preparing the Butch T, one should wear a chemical mask or a body suit to defend against fumes given off in the cooking process.[6]

WTF is wrong with you people.
Quick Google shows that GoGo is wrong with regards to the Kiwi and the Banana.

It's only temporary blindness.

What exactly were your food tastes when you were in high school? I think everybody liked bennigan's or chili's or TGI Friday's or whatever. You're in high school, you think drinking wine out of a box is high society.

And your point is? To be honest, when I was in high school, such places weren't all that common. We did have Friendly's and Denny's, but I don't recall anyone thinking those places were good. Denny's was open 24 hours, and that's why we went there. I'm not going to claim a sophisticated palate or anything. The mom and pop equivalents served food about equal to the chains of today. But the waiters and waitresses didn't wear clever pins, they weren't forced to pretend to have the time of their life bringing you onion rings, and there was no jokey decor. The funny thing is, most of those places are still in business, which tells me they're doing something right (among those things is they cater to local tastes) and that chain restaurants probably succeed where local similarly priced options are failing in some important respect.

Here's an example: http://www.barnaclebillsrumson.com/ One look at the website, and you'll see this is more or less a mom and pop equivalent of a chain. The place is packed all the time.

I was sticking up for Barry's gf. Yes, chicken fingers with honey mustard and/or ranch is somewhat bland but teenagers aren't reading the great Craig Laban to learn about what's good (Melograno) and what's not good (Serafina)

Despite the stuff that I like to cook, I'm not really a food snob. I certainly wasn't raised one. My mother did most of the cooking, and her cooking, while always edible and sometimes good, was biased toward cheap (think Depression-era cheap, meaning you never, ever buy anything you can grow or make yourself) and easy rather than fancy.

Making fun of what teenagers do is out of bounds now?

hell, I don't think it's even "bad" to go to a shitty chain restaurant now if circumstances call for it, but I welcome a little ribbing when I do
