I think they are pretty dependable actually. Now peaches are extremely hit or miss. A fully ripened peach is unbelievably good but you get a really good one like 10% of the time. Usually they are too hard and flavorless or overripe and mealy.

I gotta be honest, I love tying one on at a wedding, but seems a little over the top. Won't the bride and groom and their families get pissed at your team?

They already know what's coming. They've seen all of us drunk before and know what can happen. Also, the best man is an alcoholic, so we probably won't look as bad as him.

Bananas are the only fruit I regularly eat.

I think they're more consistently good than any other fruit. I want to kill myself when I bite into a mushy apple or peach. A mushy banana I can deal with.

i guess the saying goes... one bad apple will spoil the bunch. obviously they have never dealt with trying to buy strawberries. if one starts to get soft, you have 24 hours to finish the entire package before they all go bad.

I hear you about peaches, nectarines and plums (though you can usually tell with plums by the feel) being unreliable fruit. And pears go from rock hard to absolute mush in a few hours it seems, so while I do like pears, I hardly ever buy them. I find apples pretty reliable, as long as you know what and when to buy. Oranges are in some ways the toughest call, though again I tend to avoid them in summer and fall.

I found with strawberries, wash them when you get home by filling a bowl with cool water, soak them for a few minutes, then dry them on a towel. Remove the stems. Put them in a sealed container (I use those tall ziploc ones). They will easily last a week or more, as long as they weren't soft to begin with.

really a week or more? my standards are obviously low, because it would be amazing just to be able to get 4 days. i don't think i have had any produce that has lasted a week or more. heck, i can buy that bagged lettuce and the expiration date could be 9/10 and even WITHOUT opening it, it will go bad by the 7th.

I used to eat bananas at a fairly decent rate, but maybe 3 or 4 years ago I noticed they started making my throat irritated when I'd eat them, the irritation/itchiness got to the point where I just don't eat them anymore. Same thing happens with peaches, some apples, nectarines, and many other hand fruits. It sucks, I'm a fan of fruit.

I was supposed to vacation in the OBX this week, and well, that isn't happening. Anyone have any ideas for a family vacation I can do before the end of the year? I'm in a wedding next weekend, 9/10/11 ( :|) , so the earliest we'd be able to go is the week of 9/19, feel like that rules out most of the beach stuff on the east coast. Not looking to fly anywhere since my wife is ~5 months pregnant and we have a 4 year old son.

I'm trying to convince my wife to take a cruise in October, November or December, just the two of us and leave the kid at her folks or my folks, but she doesn't feel comfortable with that, which sucks. We live ~2 hours from any family and she never wants to hire a babysitter or ask someone we know down here to watch him for a few hours, so we pretty much never get a night out together (or separately for that matter), or do anything except "kid stuff".

Anyone have an idea of a place we can go for a week within a days drive that is relaxing and fun for kids and adults? Please? I might lose my mind if I don't figure something out.

great wolf lodge, while geared towards kids, can be pretty cool adult fun. Exspecially the MILF watching

Thanks Buck, how many days do you think you can do there? Is it a big enough place where 3 or 4 nights would be fun, or is it a one and done sort of place?

A post labor day weekend on the Jersey Shore can be rather nice--the weather is generally very good, the water will still be warm, and the crowds are gone (and prices are lower). Some things will be closed down, but you might want to check to see if the stuff you're interested in is still available.
