No. Romney is the Republican Dukakis. This is like when Dukakis rode in that tank. (Romney might be the Republican Hubert Humphrey--and that makes Bachmann the Republican McGovern, and Obama the Democrat Nixon. But you can push an analogy only so far.)

JH, my comment was really a more colorful pundit like version of your own--the analysis matches (pandering to the R base) but I just went a bit further and made the claim it won't work, in part because that group of people is never going to get on board with Mitt, and he's now alienating the establishment base which was his only hope.

Now, to be sure, I've never thought Romney would be President. He was outcampaigned by Huckabee, for heaven's sake.

Funny you should say this. I don't know about this particular instance, but I've been thinking that is exactly what he reminds me of both in general demeanor and even looks kinda. Both former governors of Massachusetts too.

If a vaguely serious Dem challenger to Obama were to emerge right now, that would be awesome. Seems like I'm seeing for people calling for it all over the place.

Obviously there's no chance he wouldn't be renominated comfortably, but the left seems angry and a public, confrontational bitch fit would be entertaining.

The Marco Rubio clip from the other day went viral and it needed to appear in my twitter feed about 20x before I decided to invest the 14 minutes in watching it

Really looking forward to him being President

President Obama has seen his popularity dip significantly in the pivotal swing state of Pennsylvania and is now tied in matchups with former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and former Sen. Rick Santorum, R-Pa., according to a new Quinnipiac University poll released early Tuesday.

A majority of Keystone State voters now disapproves of the job Obama is doing as president. Just 43 percent of voters approve of his job performance, while 54 percent disapprove. That marks a significant decline from mid-June, when voters were split evenly on Obama.

Romney holds a 44-42 percent lead over Obama, reversing a seven-point edge for the president in June. Santorum now trails Obama, 45 percent to 43 percent; in June, he trailed by 11 points.

It's the graying at the temples and the "I'm a born loser" stench to both of them.

While we're comparing Romney to losers from Massachusetts, let me suggest he most closely resembles John Kerry.

Seems vaguely presidential. Not the "fall in love" choice of his party, but a viable "fall in line" option. Can raise money. By no means stupid. But has things in his past that will trigger deep unease among swing voters, generally gives the impression of a man who combines sky-high self-regard with the absence of any core convictions, and loses the "rather have a beer with" contest because you literally can't imagine him relaxing in any way you would.

Now, I used to think Kerry lost because Rove managed to make the election a referendum on Kerry's character rather than Bush's performance. But the economic fundamentals in 2004 were a bit more favorable to Bush than I realized at the time--and it was still the closest win for an incumbent in decades. I think that if he's the nominee, Plouffe will similarly try to make the race about Romney's character rather than Obama's performance. But with the economy in much worse shape, it won't work unless he somehow shores up his base to something close to 2008 levels.

That said, if Romney isn't the Republican nominee, I have no idea what will happen.

What's this thread think of Rick Perry as a potential Republican candidate? Does he have a chance to win the nomination? Who would be his biggest Republican competitors?
