Has anyone explained to the House Republicans that the Bush tax cuts are set to expire in December 2012, and that they can't extend them on their own? And since "taxing the rich" really doesn't by itself address the debt, simply letting those tax cuts expire while Boehner cries about whatever is defensible on policy grounds? And the 2012 election will be over, so politically it's not that bad?

This vote today is going to be close, currently short one to three Republicans depending on what you read.

open letter to slugs: I looked up & down and did not recognize a successor to the pig latin politics thread. I probably should have looked for a pig-latin segue. Admins, there's still time to save us all; do your bidding.

Everyone was assuming that the House bill would pass, but 25 Republicans are on record as being no votes or leaning no votes. That's not enough.

And Matheson and Boren for the Democrats are voting no(probably the only Dem votes that were still up in the air)

As I see it, if the Democrats can explain to people that regardless of anything else, the Boehner bill will require going through this again soon, they will have the upper hand. I haven't seen any polls, but I bet if you asked the American people "would you like to see a repeat of the debt ceiling debate next year" you'd probably get upwards of 90% saying no.
