I don't know; guess my opinion is just based on a group of five or six guys in NYC who are constantly climbing the ladder working for various media companies, often to oversee their websites in some capacity

Not really. Demand for software engineers is expected to slightly rise or remain stagnant the next decade, while demand for programmers is declining and expected to continue declining by like 4% the next decade.
