It's hard to imagine a typical sponge cake beating a decent pie. Box cakes and even a typical bakery cake turn out to be nothing special. A good homemade from scratch cake can be quite good. However, as Housh points out, there are lots of cakes out there that rival pie. Not just ice cream cake, but various types of pasties. I remember Lil' Vulture's Christening cake--a Napoleon cake--it was fan fucking tastic, and I am sure a rival of any pie. And brownies are a kind of cake too. Mrs. Vulture makes this Mousse cake with a hazelnut bottom that is outrageous as well.

And these are good to look at. And eat.
