Barry, have you noticed a surge in burglaries in the Grad Hosp area? I saw something about it posted at a deli near me. Saw there was a burglary on New Year's Day at 10am

I'll look it up in the system. There's actually been a citywide rise in bank robberies lately, I know. I don't know how things are handled in specific districts, but they usually give certain "Tom" units and special beats specific assignments or details when there's certain kinds of activity going on.

Everyblock is a good site to get police reports and lots of other neighborhood by neighborhood info. Dude, here's the section about our hood:

Looks like there have been a few daytime burglaries over the last few weeks. The only thing is looking at that site too frequently can make you paranoid really quickly.

Lil' Vulture can do amazing ethnic imitations (S. Arkansas dialects). It probably helps that she attends an ethnically diverse school.

that makes sense. Most of my coworkers went to public school, or at least a Catholic school inside the city limits. I went to Country Club Prep. My only advantage is that I can still adopt a Philly accent on command.

Thanks. I wish we could get those bars for outside our windows, but since we're on the second floor we're not allowed. I just hate the idea of my wife being home alone while I'm travelling

Dude, I only found a couple calls for in-progress jobs where people saw anyone breaking in, both guys got arrested. Any other calls were reports of where people found the house broken into when they got home. It looks like it started a couple days before Christmas and has slowed down since New Year's. The other in-progress jobs were unfounded, meaning either nothing was going on or the guys who were trying to break in ran away before they made any progress.

If it's any consolation, those two arrests came when there was someone home at the time. Basically, if you or your wife hears anything that sounds like someone's trying to break in, call the police. They'll almost always be there in two minutes or less, usually faster.

The response time blows for reports or lower priority jobs, but in progress jobs, anything more important than a vandalism in progress or a domestic dispute or a serious auto accident, they're there in a jiffy. In fact, even if there's someone suspicious outside prowling around, that's a pretty high priority too. People call for the dumbest bull shit all the time and police have to respond. So never be afraid to call the cops.

Thanks Barry. We had an in-progress happen to us, I think around Thanksgiving. My wife was home alone and heard him trying to come in our bedroom window. I think (hope) he was just looking for something quick to grab and then leave right away

I keep an aluminum composite bat by the bed just in case. Mainly because the umpires kept banning it.

Yeah, when I got home, I looked around for a weapon and could only find the leg to a Rock Band drum kit

I have a walkout basement and every once in a while in the middle of the night I'll convince myself that someone has broken in through the door or window and is stealing Tupperware bins full of decorations and maternity clothes

That last piece of advice goes for everyone, though. Call 911. About anything suspicious. At worst, you make a report. You never know if something is just part of a bigger trend, in which case you're helping to stop something bad from happening.

It was weird, my wife had to suggest to the cops that they take fingerprints on the window. Then the other cop said "Hey, isn't this the neighborhood where all those rapes were?". He sees how nervous that made my wife and goes "Oh, that was a while ago, two years ago"

Yeah, it was pretty effed up. The cool thing is our neighbor looks like Kimbo Slice, so when it happened, she called me and I told her to go get him and see if he'd check out the place while she waited for the cops. The night before his place had the same thing happen to it. We're in the same courtyard which requires the person that did it to lug around a ladder and climb two fences before using the ladder under our windows

Yeah, they left the ladder under the window when they ran, and my landlord wouldn't send anyone over to get it (we don't have access to the courtyard), so I had to hang out the window to reach down and drag it through the bedroom window. They made it themselves, it was this really heavy wood and some nails thrown together. They cut the top of the ladder into little hooks, so it could go on top of pointy fences. It's in our basement right now
