Don't blame me, I voted for Kodos: A politics thread

I"m really enjoying Clinton Rossiter's Conservatism in America - The Thankless Persuasion. It's old, and not rigorously factual in the contemporary sense, but is full of thought-nurturing passages, like this one:

The reason the American Right is not Conservative* today is that it has not been Conservative for more than a hundred years. The reason it first abandoned Conservativsm, even the characteristically American version proclaimed by John Adams, may be summed in two words: democracy and industrialism.

in an "Americanized Burkean" sense; Rossiter indicates what he refers to as the laissez-faire conservatism of his contemporaries via a lower-case 'c'
Yes, but in a double utley you can put your utley on top they other guy's utley, and you're the winner. (Swish)

Leon Breaux, writing from Beijing, nails why, when it comes to his notions of "social intelligence" (whatever that is) being more vital than "real" intelligence, David Brooks doesn't know much of anything about anything (see comment # 27)

the new governor of alabama sez:
"'Now I will have to say that, if we don't have the same daddy, we're not brothers and sisters. So anybody here today who has not accepted Jesus Christ as their savior, I'm telling you, you're not my brother and you're not my sister, and I want to be your brother."

i don't want to be YOUR brother

Guaran-damn-teed when he says Christians, he doesn't mean Catholics. So I'm not his brother, I guess.

Religion in the hands of the wrong people is so dangerous.

he'd be a million times better. that's a lot of times. he's not a negative person.

of course, i'm in a state-destroying union so i may be biased. the concessions a democratic governor gets from unions are easier to get, and usually less destructive to the union.

lol
Asked about the tax-cut compromise at the end of last year, Reid said our system requires compromise. "I am going to go back to Washington tomorrow and meet with the President of China," Reid told reporter Jon Ralston. "[Hu] is a dictator. He can do a lot of things through the form of government they have."

Reid quickly realized he could have chosen his words more carefully, quickly adding, "Maybe I shouldn't have said dictator, but they have a different type of government than we have and that is an understatement."

I, for one, welcome the Alabama governor as one of the faces of the revamped Republican party.
