In the two weddings I've been in, the groomsmen have gone in together to get the couple a nice big screen TV. I don't think it was $200 a piece either time, but it's a nice thing for someone moving into a new place. Second time was cheaper because Werthless is married and one of the other groomsmen is engaged, so they paid double shares. I'm not sure that was entirely fair, but I guess their better halves were an extra plate at the wedding.

Having just gotten married, I can assure you, it's pretty close to that.

Your and my data from receiving hundreds of gifts pales to Calvin's giving five.

I know we've had this debate on here before about proper wedding expenditure.

Of the two weddings I've gone to that I wasn't in, one I gave the friend from college $100. The other we were friends with both the bride and groom from college, and my roommate (Giants fan taunting me yesterday afternoon, the bastard) and I got them like a $300 knife block that I'm sure they never used. They're divorced already. I feel like since they didn't make it 24 months married they should have to refund the purchase price of the gift.

At least that guy's parents are paying for me to go to the ND Navy game tomorrow.

Yeesh, thinking about what I spent at both of those bachelor parties. The bachelor parties for the college friends have been a lot more drunken/strip club/bank account injuring than those for the high school friends.

It's a good thing nobody likes me enough to invite to their wedding, because there's just no way in hell I can afford to be buying $200 gifts for people.
How dare you interrupt my Lime Rickey!

My largest wedding gift expenditure was around 3 grand.

I've attended 4 weddings that ended in a divorce within 5 years, and a 5th almost ended earlier this year. The brides in the last two I've attended are nervous... :)

I recall jeff2sf being prominently involved. I plan on searching back and finding it when the time comes.

I'm getting kind of girlishly excited about this; it's scaring me. I suppose it helps that I really like his fiancée or I'd be less thrilled about the whole idea.
no offense but you are everything that's wrong with America

I have been to more than 5 weddings. I have been a groomsmen in 5. I have even gone in on gifts with people who are way wealthier than I am and it still only was like 50 bucks or something. Maybe if you're friends are expecting you to spend 200 dollars they are the scum bags.

The rule of thumb, cheapskate, is to give a gift that AT A MINIMUM covers the cost of your plate at the reception. Unless you're going to some real cheapo fire hall weddings, you're way off base.

Calvin, you're a grown up now. Start acting like it before I call jeff2sf in here to spank you. And I'll assume most people would favor cash for their wedding instead of a gift, unless it's a really good gift

It actually doesn't matter whether you're a close friend or an acquaintance of the bride. It's polite to make your gift cover AT LEAST the cost of your seat. Most wedding receptions these days cost around $100/head (at least over here on the east coast), so if there are two people attending, that's $200 cash or a $200 gift. If they're a close friend, you might want to spend more. I know, that's expensive, but just think how much the bride and groom, or their families are spending to make the day happen. My own wedding was $35,000, and we cut as many corners as we could.

People who spend 35,000 on their wedding are morons though. They clearly did not cut as many corners as the could. And to be fair, they are the ones throwing the party, why should I have to pay for it?
