I really hope you lose, you epic douchebag. Then you can find your true calling as a host on MSDNC.

WOW that ad is... WOW.

I think I am starting to be for the repeal of certain first amendment rights, particularly in regards to calling political opponents Hitler, Stalin, Nazi, the Taliban, etc.

jersey is absolutely right about how this does nothing, nothing at all for the guy who is running it too. The funny thing is that, up until the "Taliban" thing, I thought it was pretty effective. But then all the credibility the ad might have had is just totally destroyed by that "Taliban" thing.

Did anybody catch the story of Michigan's Assistant AG attacking and essentially stalking U of M's openly gay student body president? I'm not even really sure what to say having read it.

hey, that's goodness, & thanks for the link, but really special? I dunno....

I do like this specific example he employs:

Believe me, it’s not doing me any good to say that Carl P. Paladino has only a 1-in-50 chance of becoming the next governor of New York. Even if those are really the odds — and to the best of my abilities, I think that’s about what they are....

If Runyan wins I'm going to be one sad panda. Dude is exactly the type of person that should be unanimously kept out of politics.

okay Jerz I changed my mind. You're right - there's hints of greatness in there:

...there’s some evidence from behavioral economics that human beings are bad at estimating probabilities out at the tail ends of the bell curve. We’re pretty decent at telling a favorite from an underdog, but we’re not so good at telling an 8:1 underdog from an 80:1 underdog or an 8,000:1 underdog, even though those are huge differences statistically....

I’m tempted to paraphrase Charles Barkley: Any knucklehead can calculate an average, but it takes brains to calculate a confidence interval....

Runyan was known as one of the dirtiest players in football. Not sure if that's a feature or a bug in politics.

I was thinking that if he wins, the Democrats need to recruit Michael Strahan to move into the district and run against him in 2012, setting up severe mixed emotions for jerseyhoya and a bunch of us...

Timothy Garton Ash on the problems caused by america's politics.

If the winner of the war in Iraq was Iran, the winner of America's decade-long struggle against violent Islamism may be China.

The good news is that America is waking up to its predicament. President Obama talks of the need for nation-building at home. Richard Haass, head of the Council on Foreign Relations and once a member of the Bush administration, reflects on "a decade of strategic distraction". A veteran Republican observes that the US is building more infrastructure in Afghanistan than in America. (The road surface of the interstate highways seems to get worse every year I come back.) Every second newspaper column now points up the contrast between China's high-speed intercity rail links and America's lack of them. Former national security adviser Zbigniew Brzezinski calls for a programme of "national renewal". Everyone acknowledges that performance in the lower half of America's school system is dismal.

There is what I call the politics of cultural distraction. Millions of air hours are devoted to arguments about gay marriage, abortion, homosexuality or, most recently, the planned Islamic centre two blocks from Ground Zero in New York. Increasingly, these resemble arguments about which tune the band should play on the deck of the Titanic. ("Let the good times roll"? "Nearer my God to thee?" Glug, glug, glug.) Although the Tea Party movement adds to the craziness, at least it spends more of its time talking about problems in the engine room.

He's a smug tidy fuck for the most part who thinks he's cleverer then he is and decades later is still living off his analysis of the eastern bloc in the run up to the fall, but it's worth a brief look for some outside assessment of how others see ye.
