Yah, weird. The ones coming in now were 9 when it happened.

My wife was pregnant with our son when it happened. We asked him and my daughter today whether they talked about it in school. They had not. We left it alone. To them today is just daddy's birthday.
I know what you're asking yourself and the answer is yes. I have a nick name for my penis. Its called the Octagon, but I also nick named my testes - my left one is James Westfall and my right one is Doctor Kenneth Noisewater.

second year of teaching, stuck in "the yellow seats" (pacino knows), so i was cut off from the rest of the staff. went up to the faculty room for lunch A and people were in shock/ crying/ talking about who they knew up, down, and out there. i had no idea. NO idea. it all happened while i was just blabbing away about study skills and so on.

we spent the rest of the afternoon watching my tiny wall-mounted tv in silence. those kids are now two years out of college.
Fine. You wanna act like you're two? I'll act like I'm one.

why do people say 'never forget', though? this has become a barometer in most people's lives the way JFK was for a previous generation. no one's forgotten.

when are we going to stop showing it, too? just wondering about that one.

i dunno, but i still remember my feelings from that day and the subsequent days. the feeling of being numb...going to school...going to practice....going home and being glued to the TV...rinse, repease for like 2 straight weeks. watching videos and recaps will never ever do justice for the actual feelings that i had that day.

this is more of a rant than a response. i suppose the "never forget" is not so much the event but the emotion of the event and how you felt THAT DAY.

Never got, nor do I ever get, emotional about this. I didn't personally know anyone involved or hurt by this. Frankly, each year I am quite amazed at how many people get so "devastated" about something that had absolutely nothing to do with them. That almost interests me more than the actual event. I have always thought it was terrible for people that had to go through it or had to wonder if their loved ones made it out OK and would never want to go through something like that myself, but that's about it.

Did Bible Study this morning. Here's the deal- I think "never forget" is code for "stay angry" for some people.

And you know what? I'm angry that someone would do this in this world, but terrorism happens every day and it's all horrible.

I said some people, Vox. I think some of the people who say "never forget" are themselves forgetting something- it's impossible to forget living through something like that and seeing the terror on so many faces. I will never forget those feelings of helplessness and insecurity. And for, say, the Baptist minister down the street, who is holding a service tonight and invited none of the mainline protestant pastors, this is about being angry and generalizing. He loved the idea of burning the Koran.

I will never forget the horrific pictures I saw on that day. I'll never forget my ex-girlfriend IM'ing me, "Brian, please turn on the TV" when I got back from Greek class. I will never forget my friend bursting into my mom's living room and saying, "I hope we turn the entire middle east into a parking lot."

I'm sad in a world where this stuff happens. I'll never forget it. But I don't need to be reminded to not forget. And I'm not going to be bullied into feeling the same rage that is inhabiting some people, including some I dearly love.

It's a wiser-than-thou attempt to divine someone else's feelings, which is always bull-shit.

But mostly the last page or two of this thread is full of people being hip and too cool for 9/11 at the very least I can say fuck you if I in response if I want.

I get your not emotional about it. Not criticizing that. But invalidating others emotional response by implying whatever with "devastated" rubs me the wrong way.

The contention that that it "had absolutely nothing to do with them" is incredibly myopic.

There's a whole lot to say about what gpicaro said in those few sentences.
