Random Thoughts, Anniversary Edition (c)

i remember the beginning of 3rd period math class, we said our prayer for the first tower being hit.

i remember 4th period history class, we did nothing but watch CNN and everything changed. 5th period i had lunch, 6th and 7th period we were let go, and 8th period physics we just talked about it. it was so jarring. even though i was only 16 and really didn't understand the gravity of the whole thing. i bought a paper on the way home from school because i knew it was a big deal, but if i'd actually understood what the deal was, i wouldn't have touched that newspaper.
no offense but you are everything that's wrong with America

i didnt go to sleep till like 4am that morning, which was fairly common since i didnt have my first class till 12:30 on tuesdays and thursdays. My roommates didnt feel it was necessary to wake me and tell me what was happening. i woke up at like 11 and the tv was on downstairs. i thought for a minute, because i was still groggy, that it was some kind of movie. i sat and stared at the tv for like 10 minutes before i realized it was really happening. went next door and found one of my buddies and we talked about it for a few minutes, then i went to my 12:30 class, where we watched tv for 30 minutes before the professor just told everyone they could leave.

classes the next day were on, but all we did was talk about what had happened.

very surreal times.

i was in a business class in HS. our room was two rooms with this retractable dividing wall in between us and a german class. i remember all of the people in my class piled in to the german room and watched with them. like most of you said, it was so surreal. none of us really knew what was happening. the rest of the day consisted of everyone talking about it in every class. all those crazy rumors would spread like wild fire. plane crashed at camp david. car bombs outside the white house. and whatever the others were. it was nuts for sure.

that KFC double down thing only has 480 calories.

I figured it would have like 800 at least.

also, those flight 93 people. goodness. i cant even imagine what i would be feeling if i was there with them. they heard about the 3 other attacks and knew they were on a plane that had the same fate. i literally would have started vomiting.

wow, eerie.

at 9:37, the MSNBC lady asks the former terrorism expert if another incident could happen as a follow up to the two towers being hit.

and at 9:37 is when the other plane hit the pentagon

I was living in campus faculty housing at the time, so I just walked to the office like normal. It was a beautiful day here, much like it was in the NE. I walked in--it must have been shortly after 8 central time, and one of my colleagues asks me, "Did you hear what happened?" I hadn't. I called Mrs. Vulture, told her to turn on the tv (pretty much like the Sleater-Kinney song Far Away.) I had classes at 9 and 10, and I didn't cancel them, but just sort of stumbled through them. I'm not sure what I did then.

My brother in law worked for Morgan Stanly, across the street from the towers, and I had another good friend who worked in lower Manhattan. I couldn't reach anyone on the East Coast for much of the day--I did finally get in touch with my mother than evening.

Today is weird--I've put out my flag. But otherwise, it's going to be more or less a normal Saturday with some bad memories.

They talked to their guy at the Pentagon 2 minutes before it got hit too.

I have been looking at this timeline on Wiki. It is just crazy to read it along with the rebroadcast newscast. All the while they are talking about the tow planes that hit the WTC two other planes are being hijacked.

Never watched the coverage. It was my second day of basic training when it happened and my access to TV was best described as nonexistent. I might watch in 20-30 years.

I certainly can't watch it today. It's important though. I realized a few weeks ago that in about 5 years, most of my students will have no memory of the event.

Yah, weird. The ones coming in now were 9 when it happened.

the part i remember the most was the biggest douche in our class was ragging on an indian kid in the class, like he somehow caused it. you know those sikhs who grew up with us. sneaky jerks.

i've never rewatched it from start to finish. i did have a history and memory class in 2002 freshman year in college where we all watched the remembrance in class. that was moving because it was the first year after the attacks. i've decided to watch today because i've really been doing nothing these past few years on this date, and i'll be doing some really fun stuff later so i really should think about the people lost.
