Thanks for all the well wishes. Kabul is about the safest place in the country, but it's still damned dangerous. Some really nasty stuff going on as well, like the Taliban using some kind of pesticide/herbicide as nerve gas and pumping it into girls schools.

I haven't posted here nearly as much as I'd of liked lately, but this is quickly becoming - if not already - the best Phillies board on the Intrawebz.

I'll send some pictures back if I can...apparently the network over there is jacked up and unreliable.

I'm more concerned about how wife does with our two kids - both under three years old - than my own safety. Nature of the beast I suppose.

I'll be floating around for another month then will be scarce...

Humbling stuff. Best of luck.

SPEAKING OF Nabisco, I have a sweet tooth craving and will need to run to WaWa or something at halftime.

Nah, I'm dispatching North Philly. Just listening along to the citywide band.

Apprehension made, gun recovered. Dunno how many people are shot.

Not that my word means anything, but from what I know I think she's nuts. Like, clearly out of her mind.

You all are way overstating the demise of email. Nothing is here yet that's going to take the place of it for work. 10 years from now we could stop using e-mails, admittedly, but we don't have anything out there now. What are we going to do, tweet a change in the HR Policy?

People don't read LONG e-mails. People read and write short e-mails all the time, otherwise why would Trent have 42 of them sent out between midnight and 6?

i'm still an email dude. Company installed IM on my laptop; i immediately unistalled it. I got in trouble- they installed it again. Lather, rinse, repeat until they finally gave up.

I don't answer my phone much either- send me an email, sport.

One of the main benefits of working from home is avoiding the interruptions of someone wandering by and wanting to talk about last night's jersey shore or something like that. I don't need to artificially recreate the interruption opportunity with IM.

We had IM when I worked at AccuWeather mainly out of necessity. If someone who was recording radio MP3s had a question about the forecast, it needed to be addressed immediately, not via e-mail. However, most everything else was taken care of via e-mail.

On a random note, I haven't watched a minute of the NFL tonight and have opted for Nadal/Verdasco instead.

I haven't used IM on my home PCs since the late '90s, but I got it at work in the last year and use it constantly.

I sometimes ignore emails from the guy I work for, but if he messages me on google chat, he always gets an immediate response.

I'm not saying IM doesn't have a role. I'm saying that in corporate America, email is still king and the prince hasn't been born yet.

My premise is not that people don't use email or that it can't be effective. Or that it's going to disappear tomorrow. It clearly is a great tool. My point is that people use it for absolutely everything (to bucky and others' point , no one even makes a phone call anymore, even when it's the fastest and best solution), and a lot of people just absolutely get crushed with sheer volume. I'm sure the average american desk worker spends entirely too much of their day "doing email" instead of actual work (when they're not reading BSG). At what point does someone say, "you know what, these 42 emails I got while I was taking a dump really aren't necessary, or effective." Surely you've all partaken in an absolutely maddening email reply-a-thon that essentially led nowhere, when a 3 minute conversation would have solved the problem--right? This type of thing happens almost constantly to me.
you sure do seem to have a lot of time on your hands to be on this forum? Do you have a job? Are you a shut-in?
