Had to go to a 5am photo shoot and have been at work ever since. I have less than nothing to do. Also FYI it's a lot more difficult to sleep on the ground sober.

Etched Chaos should be posting way more. Also, I'm officially envious of the fucker being able to watch all the games. Still, lets see him drink his way through the final game of an nlcs, stay awake till the dawn and then pass out on the couch in a haze of fumes only to wake to the blurry puzzled features of his 5 month old son.

Fucker.

So, you've been to class one time all semester. You took one of four tests. And now you want to know, on the last day of class, if there's anything you can do to make up for it. Also, despite the gum, you smell like you've been drinking. A bad sign at 1:00 pm.

so i was in state college the past two nights, as you may know. last night was the more massive of the two. mad mex, i got drunk and started a fake(maybe?) argument with our waitress because she was a Yankkake fan talking shit on the Phils. of course i did. all in fun, naturally, because i'da hit it. anywho, Mad Mex happy hour ended and we proceeded to Cafe 210, which you may know is the best place in Pennsylvania for outdoor drinking. were there for a while and moved to Zeno's which you may know is the best beer bar in State College. but at a certain point you gotta dance with who you came to the dance with, so i rolled with cheaper stuff while i text-flirted with my best friend's sister (who goes to Penn State). at this point, we're gone. i'm switching off between glasses of water and glasses of Magic Hat Lucky Kat. and the odd shot every once in a while. because hell, they were 2 bucks so why the hell not. and we were talking about going home but it wasn't even midnight so fuck it, Jager Bombs and i'm back in the game. then our friend (who doesn't drink) shows up and wants to head somewhere else, which I'm game for. always good to keep your body guessing. so we went to the Phyrst. and i danced to JR and Natalie doing some classic rock stuff, of course. and then we took a cab to my friend's place and smoked a damn cigar. fuck yeah

Intermission

fast forward to this morning, when my friend is responsible for waking up early and posting news stories to a website (note the updated AP style on "website"). so i'm all "no bfd, dude's gonna wake up early and wake me up" but that doesn't happen. instead, i wake up at 8:38, call him from his living room couch, and ask him wtf happened. at which point he panics, posts the stuff on the website, and i panic because holy shit, i need to be at World Cafe Live by noon for The Hold Steady. so my friend drives me to my car, and i put four to the floor and make love to the interstate. fast and hard. flooring it all the way to Philly. there's no way i'm gonna make it on time but i'll be damned if i'm not gonna make the effort. but the state trooper had another idea outside Duncannon--fortunately, before the speed limit dropped to 55 and then 45. had me doing 88 (!!!backtothefuture!!!) in a 65. yikes. i didn't even know my car could drive that fast. i'm still not sure it actually can. p.s. i'm likely still over the limit, BAC-wise. maybe. probably. but the officer takes my license and registration and asks me where i'm going, and i tell him i'm trying to get to Philly for work. asks me where i work. you know how this ends. "Tell those boys to be safe there in Philly," he says. a couple miles later, i'm flooring it again. cause i respect the hell outta that trooper but i'll be damned if one bleepin' car stop is gonna keep me from making it to see the Hold Steady.

for some mothra fucking reason, I-76 is blocked after the Valley Forge exit on the turnpike. for what reason, exactly, i'm not sure. but i wander around Gulph Mills for about 10 minutes while I listen to the XPN feed of the goddamn show i'm supposed to be at. and i find my way back to 76. and i park in a pay lot about two blocks away from World Cafe Live and the band has already run through like 8 songs. so i pay the attendant, run frantically out of the parking lot. but i run the wrong way and there's no exit by the street where i run to. so i hop a fence for the first time in at least 4 years. must have been a sight, a booze-smelling fat dude in last night's black button-up shirt and boat shoes jumping over a chain link fence on the west end of the 3100 block of Walnut. and then said fat dude is sprinting--SPRINTING--in that black button-up and boat shoes eastbound on Walnut Street. and oh no, that fat dude is huffing and puffing and can't sprint anymore because he's got so much alcohol in his system that his body can't possibly take the trauma this dead sprint has put it into. so the fat dude is sitting on the curb betwen two parked cars throwing up bile. bile. straight yellow. looked like fucking Mello Yello. but the Hold Steady is playing a block away. so i got it out of my system and walked over to World Cafe Live in time to see the last minute of "Southtown Girls" and the entirety of Yr Little mothra fuckign Hoodrat Friend. damn right you'll rise again.

Good student political facebook status:

Nick Clegg is Britian's Obama?!? It's more like Nick Clegg is Britain's Obama with Sarah Palin's IQ. Okay so I am biased. Clegg is alright. But David Cameron is better so deal with it.

man, i totally shoulda called Cafe the preeminent venue for outdoor drinking. oh well.

honestly, i've never enjoyed the inside of Cafe. it's always been a battle for chairs, boring as hell, and with a dancefloor fulla bros and beat chicks. not a great place to work your grind.

i kind of forgot about this until now but i broke the news that Lavar was buying the Sports Cafe. haha, i was like a giddy middle schooler talking to him. nervous as shit. just saw him sitting outside against that brick wall and asked him what was up. but anyway, it's called the 797 Lounge now and actually has original bands every once in a while, which is pretty impossible to find in the SC. but i was never a fan of that place either. drank there a lot because it was right down the block from the Collegian and they never ever closed early. so we could get off work at the newspaper around 12:30 and still get a drink before we went home. but it's still pretty much the same exact place.

personally, i don't really like Pickle's either. it's small as hell so it gets packed so easily. it's a pretty decent place when there's no one there because you can actually play darts or watch a game or whatever.

i'm talking so much about State College bars, i'm just gonna run down my power rankings:

1. The Phyrst. It's a bit trashy but that's how pretty much every bar is when you think about it. Always a pool table to be taken, decent draft selection that's not overpriced, and a live band every single night, no matter how dead it is. And oh yeah, the bartenders are smoking hot and dress like absolute sluts. No complaints there.

2. Mad Mex. I got arrested because of a d-bag bouncer here once but it's hard to hold a grudge when you're outside on a nice-weathered evening during happy hour. The margaritas are absurdly good and they have awesome food and a surprisingly good draft selection.

3. (In memoriam) The Sleaze. Probably just have a giant bias because I worked there for a year, but it was a freaking blast getting drunk there. Excepting Lulu's (and possibly that mess of a joint, Crowbar/Cell Block/Mezzanine/whatever it's called, never got drunk there which is saying something), you won't find a better litter of hot chicks anywhere in town. Their drinks were always so damn cheap that if even you were running low on cash it was a solid go-to place after midnight. No live music usually, which sucks, but if you were there when Remedy was spinning it was generally in the bank that you'd hear "This Is How We Do It" at some point and be able to rub up on a sorostitute. And fwiw, they had the best cocktail bartenders in town if you knew when to go. People never believe me when I rave about Tony's, but it was legit if you gave it a chance.

Honorable mentions: Darkhorse was clutch as a mofo when they had Roustabout! there on Wednesdays but I pretty much never went otherwise. It was kind of bro-y. But they had killer food and were very underrated in that regard. I liked the vibe and the beer selection and holy shit the Tonto's Demise was unreal. Best drink in State College.

Zeno's, if just for the beer selection and the balls to book bands like The Rustlanders or bluegrass bands and stuff like that. Really a blast if you were in the mood for that kind of thing. Only place you can find more than one person wearing plaid unless you went to Pickle's on country night I guess.

Cafe, when it's nice outside. Otherwise it's worthless. But it's tough to beat a sunny day out front. No, eff that. It's impossible to beat a sunny day out front. See everyone you know walk by and get a marathon buzz on the Yuengling pitchers.

Bar Bleu sucked but they had Roustabout! after Darkhorse gave it up so props for that. Coolest moment I've ever had in that town was a Roust there where the whole dance floor was full of the hipster kids drunkenly singing and screaming along to "Bastards of Young." Damn, that was great.

The Deli is and was sorely underrated. Only place you could get a decent martini and not feel like an a-hole for ordering it. Great food though the menu is outlandishly big. Way too big. Like, if you're hungry, it's freaking impossible to pick something. There are like 18 pages. It's like reading the encyclopedia of restaurant food. But the fajitas were always friggin' dynamite. So if you go there, just get that.

for the record I fucking hate the Saloon. never ever wanted to go there. unless i was drunk and thinking karaoke would be a good idea. but even karaoke night blows because you have to get in your request by like 1:00 and you're never drunk enough to do karaoke before 1:30.
