Maybe if it turns out to be benign we could be convinced it should be removed anyway, but I can't see the point in paying to have a malignant tumor removed (thus subjecting the cat to a lot of distress) when the cancer will probably end up killing her anyway.

I hate having to be so heartless about this. She's a nice cat.

Yup, it's cancer. The needle biopsy was a possibility, but not cheap in and of itself and wouldn't have gotten us anywhere as far as treatment anyway. So my wife decided she couldn't in good conscience just do nothing about the lump at all, and she agreed to have the vet remove it, which was done last Friday. It was large and deep, and the biopsy result came back today. Basically a very agressive form of breast cancer, which probably has already spread. I think I already found another lump on her so we're thinking she's going to show signs of being sick soon.
