Funny? That's like, sub-Leno humor. I will give it props because one can tell in this particular strip that there is a "joke" present. So to that degree, I'll agree with you that there was effort.

Well, I just used this one because there are very few of the older strips readily available online and I thought you might get a kick out of this one (from 1971).

My actual point is that there are a lot of strips that are just gags about college and family life-not everything is heavy-handed and political (although certainly some of the political strips are funny, too). There was definitely a period in the eighties both before and after the hiatus(most of the decade, really, and probably extending into the nineties) where the strip got far too preachy and topical and I think anyone who became familiar with the strip in that era would wonder what the fuss was all about. I think many of the recent strips are funny, though, with the new generation of characters. Middle age just isn't that funny, and I think it's taken a while to get back to a good balance. Again, though, my kids, with no preconceived notions, really like the early strips. It's possible the later ones appeal more to my demographic- but I enjoy them.

Go get Vicks Vapor Rub inhalers immediately. If they don't have the inhalers just get the rub and put a little on a napkin and let them smell it for a few seconds each. Just trust me on this. For some reason it enhances it.

Carlos Slim Hulo or something I think. I remember him as associated with one of my former clients. Some sort of loan.

Would you believe this is the one thing Vox and I disagree on, when it comes to buying cars? I hate cruise control, never use it, even on long trips.

Vox's only complaint about the Scion xA was that it didn't have cruise control.

Well that's okay then. Mexico Slim sounds like some kind of card shark, and if the world's capital is migrating toward hotshot poker players I'd be worried about what would happen when that fad comes to a close.

I just got an e-mail about applying to be the commencement speaker at my business school's graduation. Does anyone think I should submit David Foster Wallace's commencement speechas my entry and see what they say?

The capital-T Truth is about life before death. It is about making it to 30, or maybe 50, without wanting to shoot yourself in the head. It is about simple awareness -- awareness of what is so real and essential, so hidden in plain sight all around us, that we have to keep reminding ourselves, over and over: "This is water, this is water."

It is unimaginably hard to do this, to stay conscious and alive, day in and day out.

No, the bigger problem was the lack of a center arm-rest. Remember looking into those after-market wanna-be solutions? Cruise was definitely second to that.

Seriously, who the fuck makes a car without a center arm rest? Practically a bigger necessity than side mirrors

And cruise control... I mean, I don't think I've seen a car made in the last 10-15 years that didn't have cruise control.
