Well, I just used this one because there are very few of the older strips readily available online and I thought you might get a kick out of this one (from 1971).
My actual point is that there are a lot of strips that are just gags about college and family life-not everything is heavy-handed and political (although certainly some of the political strips are funny, too). There was definitely a period in the eighties both before and after the hiatus(most of the decade, really, and probably extending into the nineties) where the strip got far too preachy and topical and I think anyone who became familiar with the strip in that era would wonder what the fuss was all about. I think many of the recent strips are funny, though, with the new generation of characters. Middle age just isn't that funny, and I think it's taken a while to get back to a good balance. Again, though, my kids, with no preconceived notions, really like the early strips. It's possible the later ones appeal more to my demographic- but I enjoy them.
