I wept like some Random Mother (Random Thoughts here)

When I asked the one cleaning lady how her holiday was, she goes, "Woo, if we ate anymore food, we woulda needed a fridge!" I'm confused by this.

If your post was as it appears above, then yes, totally unethical.

On a serious note, I don't fault your friend for taking advantage of a loophole. Sometimes you just have to make the lay-up.

If he had to somehow forge a receipt for them to accept the return then I'd say it was unethical. If not, it's just a silly return policy for Best Buy.

Yeah, but he had to lie and act like he bought it from there.

Close the loophole? There's no loophole, Best Buy is trying to make it easier for THEIR customers to return items. We should support this company's policy as opposed to the often draconian policies imposed by other companies. That some asshat friend of Calvin Ball's has decided to take advantage of Best Buy's policy is unfortunate and unethical. Hopefully, he doesn't ruin it for the rest of us.

My wife mentioned while we were at her folks' place for Christmas that she thinks her mom has lost her cooking skillz.

Maybe I'm an asshat, too, but I just don't think there's anything "we" should be worried about getting ruined. Best Buy was charging an outrageous price that one of their competitors blew out of the water. A savvy shopper discovered this and used it to their advantage.

Lying = savvy?

I'm not really upset over this, but let's call it what it is.

Best Buy is taking a risk with their return policy for the benefit of their customers. I'm sure they understand there will be people who do this and have accepted that risk.

That being said, I don't think that makes the person any less of an asshat. If people continue to do this Best Buy will eventually change their policy and other less ethically challenged customers will end up paying the price by having to deal with a ridiculous return policy.

"Savvy shopper" = lying and fraud and "used it to their advantage" = stole $100 in store credit from an innocent bystander.

There isn't much people can't rationalize, is there?

I guess I just don't see what Best Buy is losing in this scenario. They issued him store credit, so it's not like he took the money across the street to spend at Wal-Mart or something. And they still get to sell the DVDs to some sucker(s) for $200 or whatever.
