Full of Passionate Intensity: POLITICS THREAD

Postby CalvinBall » Tue Nov 03, 2009 14:55:49

I flexed my freedom muscles today. I also did not vote for my mom for Judge of Elections or some junk. She wanted to be the minority and that is given to the person with the fewer votes.

Oh man Politico has its results set up at the top of the page now. I'm like a kid on Christmas morning.

I also wrote myself in for Constable. I think I would do a good job.

Does it count that I voted in the primaries?

Seriously, there are four "big" races I get to vote on. In three (City Council, Public Advocate, Comptroller), the Democrat is effectively running unopposed. I voted against the nominee in two of those three, and the one guy I voted for who did win I don't have much enthusiasm for. The fourth race is for mayor. The incumbent bought his way through the term-limit rule and broke every spending record in the book on his campaign; the challenger is a hack; and even the best known third party candidate, "Reverend Billy," is kind of an asswipe.

But I'll probably go just to vote on the ballot initiatives. Even though my head has sorta given up on it, my heart still swoons for democracy...

I'm not sure which I care about more--the Maine ballot initiative on gay marriage, or NJ governor's race.

I was thinking not a minute ago that so long as equality wins in Maine, I won't be upset with anything else that happens elections-wise today.

Both my parents work at the polls. They have been telling people to write my name in for Constable of our part of West Chester. I don't really know what the job entails other than not much. All I need is 10 votes to win it I think since no one is running. You all may be in the presence of greatness come later tonight.

I voted for Daggett, because I can't stand those who run either party in NJ at this point. I should have moved to PA two years ago when I had the chance.

I voted for the open-space provision, because there are too many damn people in this state already.

I voted for Daggett too, although I had a heckuva time finding his name on the ballot, which can't be a good sign for him.

I also voted for open space. I had strong reservations about the method of funding, but I'm for the principle and don't have any faith that a more responsible method will be worked out any time in the near future.

On CNN their 2008 map has Montana blue and Oregon red. That board King uses to zoom in on states.

Christie, No

I'm voting against Corzine more than anything. I don't see the value in "sending a message" by voting for the mechanical dog from Battlestar Galactica (aka voting for Corzine).

I was sending the message that I most trusted Christopher Daggett with the governorship if NJ. Environmental concerns are perhaps my major issue, and Daggett not only seemed to indicate awareness of these concerns but also brought expertise to the table. He is/was a pragmatic centrist candidate, which is largely where my allegiances lie. We can see who truly ends up voting for Daggett, but the ones I've run across are those disaffected with Corzine, but not willing to trust Christie, who promises to cut taxes without indicating what services will be reduced, leaving open the strong possibility that the ones in danger are those I most support.

The supposed Corzine/Daggett alliance is a nice bit of gamesmanship, but it doesn't really hold up if you dip your toe outside the blogospheres tainted with Christie Kool Aid.

The Democratic State Committee admitted they were paying for phone calls touting Daggett to registered Republican voters

Though I don't think there's anything wrong with voting for him if you didn't like either candidate.

Yeah, I'm aware of the trend of normally Republican voters being drawn to Daggett, and the Democratic party trying to capitalize on that. Maybe some Republican out there can explain the appeal. I latched onto Daggett early, when my choice was really whether to go for Corzine or an independent, and Corzine's camp was grousing about Daggett running and siphoning independent voters away from him.

I guess I just don't like being tarred with a Republican brush.
