I love how I go through a phase where I hate my facial hair just a week before I LOVE it. I can only hope I have the courage to keep this combo rolling through the winter.

My dad used to send him tapes two or three times a year - just playing harmonica (he was a folky), playing "DJ" - the music he was into at the time - talking a the beginning, middle, and end of the tapes, etc. Dude has all of the tapes - 54 of them (one from a month before he died), most of them are on cassette some on reel to reel - and he's going to give them to me.

Man, that is going to be a cosmic moment, hearing my dad's voice for the first time in 26 years.

Hey Vox, that's really neat. And it's probably gonna be real melancholy, too. It will be really cool to share that with Vox Jr. & Baby Vox in a couple years, too.

CrashburnAlley wrote:I'm trying to think of a word and Googling hasn't helped me. It's sort of like a portmanteau (a blend of two or more words). But this one has to do with the mispronunciation of a word eventually taken to be the correct pronunciation or one of several correct pronunciations. I think a good example of this is "vice versa" being pronounced "vice-a versa". What's the word for this? Or am I crazy? (Not mutually-exclusive.)

I don't believe I've ever come across a single term for this. A spelling pronunciation seems to be the closest to it, but I don't think that's as catchy as you are looking for.

I'm not sure vice versa is such a good example of this. Both pronunciations (with one or two syllables in the first word) are accepted. It's really just a straight Latin term that has been accepted into English, and in Latin vice (used in this sense)would receive two syllables. The pronunciation of vice with one syllable is actually probably more recent, and has been adapted because that is how the word vice is pronounced in English. it has been accepted even though the word vice meaning evil is from the Latin vitium meaning offense or blemish, while the vice in vice versa is from vicis meaning position or office (vice versa meaning literally "the position being changed".

I think this whole DIAF internet meme is one of the stupidest things ever on the internet. It's not funny. It's not remotely clever. And it's pretty sick when you think about it.

On another board I posted on, DIAGF was used extensively until it was banned by moderators about a year ago. (Die in a grease fire) I used to think it was funny if used sparingly. Now, not so much.

That pretty much all you've retained from Latin class, isn't it?

Uh lets see I can still conjugate a verb I think. At least in present tense. Been trying to remember the different endings for the different declensions. I think I still know first and second declension. I could still read the basic stuff I'm sure.

I wish I was old enough to get caught up in the Evan Dando-as-musical genius hype. Because I would have been riding that funeral cruise for all it was worth.
