Don't know a thing about Dallas, but as someone right around your age with experience picking up and moving far away from home, I say go for it.

Houshphandzadeh wrote:I can't find that moving thread. Is Dallas really as terrible as everyone tends to say? I have a bizarre move-to-Denton offer and am considering it a bit, just for the sake a jolt to my life. Is the whole "move somewhere just because/$#@! up your life on a lark" thing overrated anyway? Rent would be super cheap and I'd be living with awesome people, but in Denton, Texas.

OK, Denton isn't exactly Dallas. It's north west of Dallas a bit. It's closer to Ft. Worth than Dallas, and Ft. Worth is cooler than Dallas in my opinion. And while Smitty is right about the whole Metroplex thing, Dallas and Ft. Worth have a different feel. Based on a quick glance at craigslist, Ft. Worth rents are way cheaper! Both cities have some reasonably interesting neighborhoods. Denton does have the University of North Texas.

There are plenty of good restaurants, bars, and such. But it's also mid-America, so you'll find lots of people insisting Joe's Crab Shack is good eating. What I don't know is how easy it is to meet people. I didn't find Philly to be all that great for meeting people, though that probably had more to do with my particular situation and anti-social tendencies than anything else. There's a huge Mexican influence, though less than in San Antonio. There are lots of malls, I don't think the drivers are near as crazy as those in N. Jersey.

If you absolutely love Philadelphia, then you probably won't like any of those places. If, however, you feel you're in a rut, and a change would do you good, then there are worse places to end up. Yes, it gets hot. Summer started yesterday around here (Our weather is a lot like Dallas's, but with more humidity.) and will end sometime around the beginning of October. So bring shorts.

If you do move out, I'd love to go to a Rangers game with you.

Thanks for the advice, y'all. The thing is, if I were stuck at my current situation indefinitely, I'd be all over this move, but my current plan was to wrap up library school in December, then apply to jobs all over the place, willing to go just about anywhere with a preferred list of places like Kansas City, Savannah, Madison, Austin, Portland OR, shit like that. So I'm not sure if I should ride that plan out or jump on this and maybe have to move again in a year. I gotta go TO BE CONTINUES

I know a guy in Philly who owns more than forty pairs of boots. He's in a pretty good band and also is my coke dealer.

Housh, isn't your degree on-line? Can't you finish it anywhere? Or is it just the prospect of making two moves in a year? What's so great about the situation in Denton that you'd even consider bailing on the graduate degree, being that you're pretty close to finishing it up?
