Non-Catholic also.

Growing up, St. Patrick's Day was an annoyance -- the other kids were given free license to pinch you if you were so foolish as to fail to wear green. In college, it was just another excuse to drink, and we hardly lacked those. Nowadays it's just another day, as I don't really drink anymore.

Except corned beef is fucking awesome. I made some for dinner last night because it was on sale at Giant (with extra nitrites!) $1.99/lb.

The pride I took in my Irishness was pretty well undermined by these Irish pricks I knew in New York who constantly harped about how Irish Americans were full of shit and were also too ignorant to care about my explanations of ethnic neighborhoods in America and how important they are to so many people.

I'm English, so I find the idea of celebrating the national holiday of the group oppressed by my ancestors for generations to be pretty awkward. I have no notable Irish ancestry to celebrate, so why celebrate? That said, if it's your thing, go for it and have a great time.

All this applies to Cinco De Mayo, too. It's a really important day for Mexicans; when honkies make sport of it as an excuse to drink Corona and Cuervo, it's insulting.

I don't know how real Irish people feel about Americans aping the holiday (Wiz?), but I think most Irish Americans are of the "Everyone is Irish on St. Patrick's Day" mindset.

I know I always feel better when other people are drinking.

If I was still living with my parents, we'd have a nice Irish dinner (by which I mean a normal dinner plus some sweet potatoes or something) and a few beers, and that would be cool. Living in the city, it kind of just flies by me; if I were to go out, it would be to one of my regular bars with my regular people, and I'll do that on any old Tuesday I feel like it. Some shit show at Finnegan's Wake or whatever just doesn't interest me.

I guess so, but even so, I think I'd just prefer some intellectual honesty from non-Irish observers ("We're piggybacking this holiday as an excuse to drink ourselves shitty!").

It's got a lot of similarity to New Years Eve w/r/t the "Amateur Hour" quotient. See: Hoboken last weekend.

I don't mind anyone else celebrating it, but it'd be nice if it weren't full of so much shit (see: "Irish Potatoes," green beer, Irish car bombs, the stupid pinching thing)

Shit, let's let the Irish celebrate being Irish, let everyone drink whatever beer they want (preferably an Irish one, but if the Irish ain't picky, I guess it doesn't really matter if anyone else is, either), and wear whatever friggin' color they want.

What bugs me is that I put on a bunch of Irish songs at an Irish bar on Friday night and the bartender skipped them because everybody else was a bitch about it. Live and let live*, you know?

*If English, read as "live and let die"

Look, I'm not Irish. I'm still eating some goddamned cornbeef, some fucking cabbage, and potatoes. And I'll drink beer if I want to. I probably won't wear green.

I am feeling a good bit better so I might break out the leprechaun hat and head out. I am gonna wear a green shamrock hoodie. I don't care if I am not Irish. I can pretend

I'm Irish but I can't say we ever even remotely celebrated it other than wearing a green shirt or something.
