I'm watching this too. He turned it around--said that Biden closed strongly, which I think is right.

Watching her there with her baby, my strong dislike is receding. I just hope she goes home and does well by her family--not to Washington.

I'd like to say two pro-McCain things...

1. The Obama voting 96% of the time with his party bugs the crap out of me. I don't know if the number is completely accurate (though I think it is, after all, Palin is an excellent memorizer), but again, let's be real, John McCain is MUCH better at bucking his party than Obama.

2. I look at Palin holding her baby and it fills me with absolute rage towards those who suggest it's not hers. This is a non-issue people. Do not go there. As a parent of a 16 month old, I find the inferences disgusting but it's not a little bit relevant even if it was true. I'm looking at you, sully.

That said, I can't wait to pull the lever for Obama. I'm done watching debates.

Andrew Sullivan, just after she was revealed and the PDS started.

Really disappointed in the "mainstream media". That had to be the worst debate performance I've ever seen. We are not supposed to score her on a Palin scale here people.

I'm watching the debate again, this time drunker.

I still can't understand what she's trying to say. There's something to be said for the art of "bull shitting"...heck, I'm a salesman who makes a living off of it...and the woman can't bull shit.

However, her gay rights answer was awful and IMO Biden's gay rights answer was his strongest of the night.

Actually, Biden's response to the desire to not debate the causes of global warming was spot on--how can you begin to address the problem if you don't understand the cause? I mean, it's like a fat person saying let's not debate why I'm fat, let's do something about it. I'll start drinking diet soda with my Supersize Fries and bacon cheeseburger.

Joe Biden doesn't understand the cause. He said, "man is responsible for global warming." You won't get a single academic to say that. Al Gore won't say that. If Biden did some research he'd know that most scientists agree that the methane from livestock gas has more carbon emissions than man.

methane - which is also released from landfills, coal mines and leaking gas pipes - is 23 times more effective than carbon dioxide at trapping heat in the atmosphere.

Fortunately people other than Joe are dealing with global warming. Both Sarah Palin and Joe Biden are right. The world is warming. The most experts say about man's role is, however, that man is likely one of the contributors to global warming. If we take Joe's word for it that man is responsible we won't address all of the problems.

I thought both Biden and Palin did very well. I don't think Biden gains much by doing well. Palin could regain the confidence of a lot of people who've jumped off the bandwagon.

Things that surprised me:
1. Joe Biden invoking the car accident that killed his wife and injured his children.

2. Sarah Palin stealing the best lines from past debates ("There you go again." "You were for it before you were against it.") and assuming that no one would notice.

3. Joe Biden saying that the United States needs to change the education system and fundamentals of Pakistan, then saying the US has a right to enter any country that harbors terrorists and that nations can forfeit their sovereignty, and then saying that he disagreed with the Bush Doctrine of preemptively entering countries.

4. Sarah Palin getting away with not giving a weakness.

What about Palin saying, "I don't have t answer questions as they are asked" ??

The republicans are masters of repeating mantras over n over and telling a story, making people 'feel' a certain way, no matter how they lie or play fast n loose with facts and reality. They ARE REPUBLICANS, they will foster and protect REPUBLICAN values and policies, not all the different than the last 8 years. They can't both be "changing Washington", neither is changing washington but Republicans are Republicans. McCain/Palin isn't different enough from Bush/Cheney to make any difference. But their tacticians are masterful. They just repeat thigns over n over until the dumb-asses repeat it, like believing Iraq and Saddam had anything to do with 911.

Ha ha ha ha. Biden gave a shout-out to a recent meal in a restaurant in Wilmington. One that apparently closed a few decades ago.

I agree with you for the most part (and haven't really heard much talk of this since right after the pick; Joe Sixpack doesn't read Sullivan), but if it were true, it'd be very relevant.

It was kind of a poor choice of words on my part. It'd be a hell of a weird thing and I guess maybe it would disqualify her. Ultimately even if she did raise her grandkid as her kid, at the end of the day, a vulnerable baby boy is being loved.

Anyway though, let's not get lost in the weeds, it probably should disqualify her from the ticket (then again there are about 15 other things that should and none of them have yet), the very question is insulting.

I'm fascinated by the business thing here, Vox. You really think they regret it? He's pretty well trafficked right? Other than that, as business people, what do you want from a bolg?

By the way, I've definitely read the inferences on the baby in other places, but it's possible those were just people linking to sully.

I read Sullivan's blog, and I really like it. Wish I were as cool as you guys.

He certainly boasts about his traffic, and it seems like it would be easy enough to call him on it if he were BS'ing there.
