Gwen Ifill's Crazy Blue 1980s Style Jacket Politics Thread!

Grumble grumble censorship grumble grumble.

My hatred of Sarah Palin isn't political. I'd hate her if she was a football commentator or a writer just as much. She's the ultimate expression yet of the triumph of style over substance.

I watched the entire debate and I like Palin even less than I did before the debate (maybe not so much personally but certainly as a VP candidate). I am a Barack supporter but I honestly tried to be open-minded about Palin.

I think Palin held her own last night (i.e. she probably didn't do any major damage to McCain) but she had, like, four talking points and she beat them to death. That might not be so bad but the tax talking point with regard to Obama raising taxes on the middle class was proven to be completely and utterly false months ago.

IMHO, her one answer when she essentially said "I'll talk about what I want to talk about" essentially told me she couldn't comment on the topic actually being discussed. She added absolutely NOTHING to the discussion on health care, she looked like she didn't have the first clue what Biden was talking about when the foreign policy questions came up and what everybody is calling "folksy" struck me as condescending and cartoonish.

I think Biden did kinda sleepwalk through the first 45 minutes or so but I thought he really hit some HRs in the second half. I thought he crushed her when he described (without rebuttal) how McCain was going to pay for the $5,000 health care tax credit (including calling it the "Ultimate Bridge to Nowhere"); the foreign policy stuff wasn't even close and I loved the "he is no maverick on important issues" bit toward the very end.

Overall, I thought Biden did a great job of attacking when necessary but not coming off as "smackin' a ho". I think Obama can wrap the Presidency up with a solid performance next week. Anybody who really watched the debate should have come away from it hoping to hell that McCain lives to 120 should he be elected (God Forbid). Really, Governor? A shout out?

Yes - a "shout out" to Mr. Soandso's 8th grade class back at some school in Wasilla. Next she'll be fist-bumping foreign heads of state with the phase "Whatup Dawg".

Palin and McCain plan to steal it with the extra power they are going to try to get for the VP by crapping on the Constitution.

Palin: "I do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the Office of Vice President of the United States and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States - except for the part we change so that I get to stick my cute little nose into anything that I feel like."

My apologies, the shout-out was to a third-grade class:

Palin: You mentioned education and I'm glad you did. I know education you are passionate about with your wife being a teacher for 30 years, and god bless her. Her reward is in heaven, right? I say, too, with education, America needs to be putting a lot more focus on that and our schools have got to be really ramped up in terms of the funding that they are deserving. Teachers needed to be paid more. I come from a house full of school teachers. My grandma was, my dad who is in the audience today, he's a schoolteacher, had been for many years. My brother, who I think is the best schoolteacher in the year, and here's a shout-out to all those third graders at Gladys Wood Elementary School, you get extra credit for watching the debate.

Incidently, when she mentioned her Dad is when she winked at him.

At least 14 members will change their votes on the bailout bill according to The Hill.

Yes, though not for a political poll. I also worked for a polling organization for 2 years. Most of my work was policy evaluation, but I did some political polling. No, I didn't call people on the phone. I did crosstabs and wrote boring reports.

quick summary... question: best and worst thing cheney did as VP.

palin's answer: worst - shoot his friend in the face. best - bush was there to talk to familes of troops that suffered. and cheney supported that.

knocked it out of the park.

that seems like a decent commercial, actually, the sigh part is kinda unnecessary.

so basically...the best thing he did was support george bush supporting the troops? does she even know what a VP does? (oh wait, wait, she doesn't, we knew that)
