Just like a politician, throw your princpals out the window if and when you can get personally compensated.

:?:

I was joking that you dont care who wins the election because you have a job no matter who wins. (Guess it was a bit of a stretch)

Oh, I still really want McCain to win. I'm just hopefully not as dependent on it as I thought I was for my next job if I decide I want to stay in politics.

I think that Palin interview will play just fine in red-state America - especially the part about Obama having his finger in the breeze and McCain having the necessary experience. Do I agree with that argument? No. But I think it, particularly the latter part, is one the McCain campaign ought to be making.

I think the average voter would like someone more experienced than Obama to be handling this financial mess, but I think the average voter also would like someone less tied to lobbyists and the old-boy network than McCain. So both have their weaknesses here, but McCain should and pretty much has to play the experience card. (The veteranosity card?)

Palin basically continues to play her role of firming up the right-wing base and I think she does well with that. Those folks don't care if she has well-crafted, sophisicated answers to the media's questions. They hear her twang and think she's one of them.

Watching the latter part of that interview, I found myself suspecting Palin had barely heard of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac a month ago, and had virtually no idea what they do or why. And that's okay - but this really is a person ill-equipped to be a heartbeat away from the presidency even if you like her politics. Dan Quayle would seem like an absolute giant next to her.

Not sure whether to post this here, or in the TV thread.

I just got an e-mail, ostensibly from Jason Alexander, titled "A Show about Nothing." It's a fundraising pitch for Mark Warner's Senate campaign in Virginia.

I am confounded as to the possible connection there, or why an appeal from George Costanza would be effective? Luckily, Mark Warner, who I like, doesn't remotely need my help. Since I no longer live in Virginia, he won't be getting it, although I hope he wins. He's up 30 points in the polls on Jim Gilmore, another former VA governor.

Speaking of Jews in Florida...

Sarah Silverman made a video (NSFW) for The Great Schlep which is urging Jews to go to Florida and convince their grandparents to vote for Obama.

Pretty funny.

The link features a quote from Palin's preacher that includes stereotyping comments about "Israelites." Soon after the Palin selection first broke, I remember seeing the argument that her Jews-for-Jesus affiliation might not play well in Florida. I was hopeful, but that felt like a stretch... and yet Obama seems to be gaining ground in Florida.

This is a big deal. I know old Jews; I'm related to old Jews. They might not be particularly inclined to vote for the young black guy. But they damn sure won't vote for a shiksa who might be (as they see it) an anti-Semite.

For a second, my first reaction was, is there a swing state with lots of Jews? I had, for a moment, forgotten all about Florida.

She shoots better, even when pregnant. Who wouldn't vote for Margie?

she was in burn after reading. good surprise. i would vote for her to be VP off of those two roles.

back in the day, McDormand played hot better than Palin too: see Blood Simple

PA has a pretty fair number of Jews too between the Philly metro area and Pittsburgh, including one of the bigger areas of Orthodox Jews in Squirrel Hill.

That was totally an unfair interview by Couric. She's a relentless woman-hater asking irrelevant questions. Like Sam Waterson on a crack and hooker binge. America needs Palin. Don't be a hater.

More Palin here.

With one or two exceptions--me definitely not among them--I don't think any of us here fully understands the economic crisis. But damn, I think pretty much all of us have a better grasp on it than does Palin.

No idea if he needed it or not, but this has to be the biggest possible boost to Dan Quayle's self-esteem.

This was interesting to me (a comment from dajafi's link)

What's striking to me about Palin is how well she recovers from being flustered. Like most of us, when she gets caught bull shitting her voice starts to quiver, her grammar breaks, her face falls, etc. A completely normal response to being over one's head.

But unlike most of us, once she gets through having bull shit her way through her lack of knowledge and gets back to her rhetoric her voice settles, her countenance lifts and she charges ahead as if nothing happened. That's not normal. Not good or bad; but definitely not normal.

Palin on Alaska and Russia

No video, just a transcript.

With the exception of Giuliani conceding during the primaries (which I wound up not even seeing), I'm not sure I've ever looked forward to anything in politics as much as the VP debate.

(Then again, I was looking forward to the Brett Myers-Jo Jo Reyes matchup too, so...)

As wizlah would say, Jaysus. Someone said it after the Charlie Gibson interview, but she really does come across as the kid in class who didn't do the homework and then gets called on and put on the spot.

Damn straight, Wood. Damn straight.

Palin is a shining light for all of us - for anyone who has been held back or denied an opportunity for lack of skill or knowledge or other "qualifications." Why can't I be a ML reliever? I played high school baseball. Sure, I probably couldn't break 70 MPH at this point in my life, but what else does Geoff Freaking Geary have going for him. I am the father of multiple children. I can relate to the young fans that are so important to future of the game. Not to mention that I would be an awesome clubhouse guy; pure grit. It's not fair.
