Here's a pretty stunning account of Palin's mayoralty. I have no idea if this is someone who's credible or a local nut with an ax to grind, but probably worth consideration:

Her experience is as mayor of a city with a population of about 5,000 (at the time), and less than 2 years as governor of a state with about 670,000 residents. During her mayoral administration most of the actual work of running this small city was turned over to an administrator. She had been pushed to hire this administrator by party power-brokers after she had gotten herself into some trouble over precipitous firings which had given rise to a recall campaign. Sarah campaigned in Wasilla as a “fiscal conservative”. During her 6 years as Mayor, she increased general government expenditures by over 33%. During those same 6 years the amount of taxes collected by the City increased by 38%.

This was during a period of low inflation (1996-2002). She reduced progressive property taxes and increased a regressive sales tax which taxed even food. The tax cuts that she promoted benefited large corporate property owners way more than they benefited residents. The huge increases in tax revenues during her mayoral administration weren’t enough to fund everything on her wish list though, borrowed money was needed, too. She inherited a city with zero debt, but left it with indebtedness of over $22 million. What did Mayor Palin encourage the voters to borrow money for? Was it the infrastructure that she said she supported? The sewage treatment plant that the city lacked? or a new library? No. $1m for a park. $15m-plus for construction of a multi-use sports complex which she rushed through to build on a piece of property that the City didn’t even have clear title to, that was still in litigation 7 yrs later--to the delight of the lawyers involved! The sports complex itself is a nice addition to the community but a huge money pit, not the profit-generator she claimed it would be. She also supported bonds for $5.5m for road projects that could have been done in 5-7 yrs without any borrowing. While Mayor, City Hall was extensively remodeled and her office redecorated more than once. These are small numbers, but Wasilla is a very small city.
...
While Sarah was Mayor of Wasilla she tried to fire our highly respected City Librarian because the Librarian refused to consider removing from the library some books that Sarah wanted removed. City residents rallied to the defense of the City Librarian and against Palin's attempt at out-and-out censorship, so Palin backed down and withdrew her termination letter. People who fought her attempt to oust the Librarian are on her enemies list to this day. Sarah complained about the “old boy’s club” when she first ran for Mayor, so what did she bring Wasilla? A new set of "old boys". Palin fired most of the experienced staff she inherited. At the City and as Governor she hired or elevated new, inexperienced, obscure people, creating a staff totally dependent on her for their jobs and eternally grateful and fiercely loyal--loyal to the point of abusing their power to further her personal agenda, as she has acknowledged happened in the case of pressuring the State’s top cop[.]

But, thank goodness, she's not a Democrat. So that record doesn't matter.

I imagine that 33% spending increase figure tracks pretty damn closely to population growth (something our intrepid on the ground reporter left out, and it's pretty important considering the town has more than doubled in size since 1990) plus inflation.

Yeah, that doesn't bother me.

Reading the whole thing, I'm inclining toward the "nut with an ax to grind" interpretation. But the pattern of making and taking action against "enemies" seems like something that should bother people after eight years of a presidency that did this.

edit: the full thing is available in the comments to this story, about three-quarters of the way down the page. The writer is actually very complimentary of Palin in some respects.

I don't know if this comes from a nut job, but reading the entire piece, it does seem to come from someone with a passionate dislike for Palin. Considering the fact this is being put forward by Andrew Sullivan, the same guy who's demanding that Palin take a DNA test to prove that her baby with DS is actually her baby based off of some kook's conspiracy theory at Kos, I'm highly skeptical.

The pick of Palin is really shaking up the opposition in ways I never imagined. Who knows how this will all play out in the long run, but the Dems sure seem to be desperately grasping at anything they can to bring her down. Kind of like a guy who's who's trying to grab the life preserver as he's drowning.

The big question is whether or not they will reach too far (if they haven't already) to validate the beliefs (fair or not) of many of Hillary's supporters that the Obama campaign and/or a certain segment of the Democratic party is misogynistic.

I do wonder how often it would be better to just say "Great, congratulations" and move on. It's impossible to expect the press not to be interested in Palin, never mind the juicyness of this whole unwed mother gold-nugget - but if you're ObamaBiden, you're probably better off just moving on and saying "I'll see you at the debates" - the more fuss you make, the more likely people will be interested in why you feel you need to make such a fuss.

Granted, ObamaBiden probably isn't doing much of this themselves.

I saw most of those same Palin stories reported in more neutral fashion in other places, so I don't doubt that many of those things happened, and I'm sure many of the details were similar to what was reported by the "nutjob." I mean, the sports complex thing is a legit story, as is the librarian thing. And she does seem to have a history of firing people who "get in her way" and surrounding herself with yes-men if you read her background.

...Disco Stu was the father?!?

edit: There was more to this post. I took it down because I was visited by either a flash of the future or an unusually logical thought, and didn't like what it showed me.

So instead I give you: Palin's blog. Money quote:

Ha, it took me a minute to realize that was not really hers.

What are the odds that some news outlet eventually refers to it as actually being hers?

Palin might not believe in global warming, but she could be its cause.
