Where does a 19 year old get the idea that Jesus and radical conservative politics go together? From Dad and the group of people Dad and Mom have chosen to spend their time with. So, it's somewhat relevant.

You don't need to bring Bob Schaffer's kid into it if your beef is with someone linking Jesus with conservative politics. I think it's the other posters which dajafi didn't link too that are a little more offensive, and I'm thinking what a 19 year old kid finds funny to put on his Facebook page doesn't always have much of a correlation to his father's beliefs.

But whatever, it's funny because the dad is a Republican. If some Dem was running for Congress, and their kid had hippie crap like marijuana leaves and a Che Guevara picture on their facebook page and it was on a conservative website getting mocked online, people would think that was mean and wrong to bring someone's child into it.

I'm pretty sure that person would be mocked in this thread just the same.

jehayzus I wish my maytag spun as vigorously as you do - and you do it without even the push of a button

to your whining rejoinder about 'if it was a dem's kid', you know full well you'd be crowing about how "we're winning the debate on wacky spawn-of-pols antics".
Yes, but in a double utley you can put your utley on top they other guy's utley, and you're the winner. (Swish)

I'll admit that Bob Schaeffer seems exemplary of the kind of pol I most detest: vicious, self-righteous and dishonest, in the Tom DeLay mode. (DeLay is, IMO, the single most despicable person in public life over the last, I dunno, 30 years? Against incredibly strong competition, no less.) Of course it's not surprising that so many of DeLay's subordinates were built to his specs.

But obviously no political faction has a monopoly on cruelty, questionable sense of humor or general lameness. And if the kid of some Democrat has embarrassing stuff out there, I feel pretty confident we'd know about it and, probably, mock it.

Certainly I didn't mean it as having any bearing on policy. I just thought it was funny, and admittedly I enjoyed a little schadenfreude at Schaeffer's expense. Now I'm losing that because it's obviously bummed out jerseyhoya, whom I prefer cheerful and glib.

The hell of it is that the "WWRJD?" poster probably was designed by a lefty, and meant ironically.

Tonight's a good drinking night, due to the lack of opportunities presenting themselves later in the week. Tomorrow -> sober so I can wake up at 5 and watch soccer. Thursday -> no Phils.

I feel like I saw "Slavery Gets Shit Done" on a t-shirt once, probably at tshirthell.com. Offensive? Probably, but not to be taken seriously.

I dare you to wear it in the neighborhood where I work, and see who takes it seriously.

The Slavery Gets Shit Done is a crude, unfunny joke. I don't think that the kid actually supports slavery.

Should I believe everyone who wears a Che shirt supports violent revolution, communism and summary execution of political foes? I mean, that's not warm and fuzzy either.

Gotcha. Myself as well, though not so much the argument part.

edit: I also get pissed when I see the Che shirts. I don't think it's as offensive as a joke about slavery (which btw is actually a lousy economic system) but it's also less over the top and thus somewhat more likely to taken seriously.

Yeah, that's a good point. Whatever, I don't care that much, but there is a world of difference between wacky left teenagers looking to find themselves and wacky right teenagers doing the same. The central tenets of the most lefty-hippy types generally promote peace (to the point of embarassing naievete) and a sense of "social justice" wherein everybody has enough and nobody too much. While some may find these ideas overly flowery or unrealistic or whatever, they are generally indicative of a heart that is in the right place. Even revolutionary figures like Che Guevara and Mao Tse-tung really represent the idea of a society where nobody has too much before everyone has enough for most kids. As soon as they actually bother to find out exactly what kind of violence these people helped to perpetrate, most people in this category get a little less enamored of their heroes.

"Slavery gets shit done" and confederate flags all over one's web site, however, are indicative of a young mind already cynically convinced of social darwinism, and, more to the point, already trained to think certain ways about minorities, etc. It's also mean-spirited in a way that lefty teenage fascinations tend not to be. To see a young person so jaded about the world is kind of sad in its own right. So, when a Republican congressman's son is found to have a lot of such stuff all over his facebook page, it raises some questions about what kind of home the senator keeps, and what his true beliefs really are --- all too often, kids get their cues for this sort of bile from those closest to them, after all.

This is to say nothing of how poor a job the senator has done in teaching his son about politics: if you want Daddy to STAY a senator, try keeping certain inflammatory ideas to yourself!
