Random Thoughts Thread II

Postby TenuredVulture » Mon Jan 28, 2008 10:48:32

The HFCS thing is complicated, involving government subsidies, the fact that it behaves different than sugar in baked goods (producing desirable qualities) and questions regarding its impact on health.

It's cheap, because corn subsidies make it cheap (though maybe diverting corn into ethanol will change this).

Remember too that sugar, white sugar, brown sugar, even honey are all empty calories, and if you're trying to lose weight, to be limited.

Does it really behave differently? Because I thought it was just cheap.

It's cheap because of corn subsidies and tariffs on imported sugar.

I think it makes baked goods mix better--it dissolves more easily than sugar. It also gives them a moist soft texture and helps the browning process.

Some people think it accounts for the difference in taste between box cakes say and one from scratch. I don't know about that--I think it might also have to do with freshness, the use of liquid as opposed to solid fats, and the absence of preservatives in home-baked goods. Anyway, I've found that with a little experience, baking from scratch isn't really any more time consuming tha n using a box mix.

I tried (for VoxJr's first birthday) to make a cake from scratch. It was difficult, and after about three tries, I gave up. I'll readily admit to using The Cake Doctor book and have gotten rave reviews for these cakes with this wacky buttercream recipe I found a couple years ago on AllRecipes.

Although I do have a good apple cake recipe, so maybe I have to try that sometime, without the apples.

My boss has spent more than $5,000 in the last week on his cat, which he found out had stomach cancer last Tuesday.

My cat was the most expensive cat I've ever heard of and I could have bought A LOT more of his brothers and sisters and cousins for that kind of scratch

My boss is also sorta nuts, and has told me that he'd throw me in a furnace if that would save his cat's life, and I believe him.

About this time last year my wife and I had to decide between spending thousands on drugs and whatnot to help our cat's failing liver and have her die in a couple of months, or spend $100 to have her euthanized immediately. Guess which we picked?

You went with the free option and chucked it out the window on I-95?

Same thing with my dog a few years back, except it was my parents decision. At the end, it got so bad that they had him put to sleep. Really depressing seeing your pet get like that.

Of the four partners at my firm, he's my favorite. That says a lot about how crappy the other three are as human beings.

Lead is the primary ingredient in Flake white or lead white, the most superior white oil paint one can find on this planet.

So, I had a cat when I was a teenager, and it stayed home when I left. Fast-forward to when Vox and I are weeks away from getting married. My parents, at the same time, were moving out of the home in which I grew up (closing was the Monday after our Saturday wedding). Apparently, the cat couldn't take the stress of moving, and was showing its emotions by puking and pooping all over the place. So, my mom had the cat put to sleep, but didn't tell me. She made Vox tell me hours before my bridal shower, which was held at my parents house.

Blech. Too freakin' big and expensive.

I bought the "Matrix 3" triple-blade store-brand razor from Giant. It cost $6 with two blades, and refills are four for $3. Compare that to the $4 cartridges for the Fusion.

I'm a Fusion guy. I originally bought it because I'm a sucker for marketing and that bright orange packaging just drew me in, but I actually really like it.
