Let's also not forget the 71 goals over the last 3 years while playing 75+ games in all 3 years and the Flyers having one of the worst offenses in the league this year.

The trade was defensible at the time. Of course it's easy to lambaste it in hindsight, but few predicted Hartnell's resurgence (though many called RJ out as being done).

Yeah, but no one is "lambasting" it. It was Hextall's worst move, in hindsight, and not that bad. He's been a great GM. The move made sense financially at the time but in the end didn't work out. Hartnell despite his dumb penalties has been 100x better than Umberger. Hartnell's salary could be cleared now for a late round draft pick. At the time that didn't look likely. Homer really lost his mind at the end there with some of those contracts.

Great write up on BSH on how the expansion draft will affect the Flyers

I'll still defend that trade though, and if it's the worst thing Hextall does in his career, then that's great

Yea, my reaction was a bit much. I'm just so use to "worst" move ever being something devastating. It was not that bad of a trade and that it's considered the worst is something.

Precisely. He could never fit in the system that Hakstol uses. Too slow, weak defensively, and took way too many penalties; especially in the offensive zone. I guess he was a good guy in the locker room and stuck up for his team mates on the ice but that wasn't enough to cover for his play here and now in Columbus.

if he made a trade based on fitting into a coach's system, who he would hire over a year later, he's better than i give him credit for.

Don't think Hartnell was great 5 on 5, maybe he would help the PP but Schenn actually filled his role well I thought. They were much better 5 on 5 this past year then they had been previous years. Seemed like less dumb penalties as well.

Getting rid of Hartnell was a step in the direction of the style of play that Hextall wanted and that Hakstol used. Hartsy didn't fit that style of play; he just doesn't work in a speed oriented style.
IMO, Hextall wanted to hire Hakstol was soon as he got the GM job. He started to line up the team to fit the style of play that Hakstol used. Hexy gave Berube a chance to bring about that type of play. When he couldn't do that, he was gone and Hakstol was hired.

Are we really comparing Hartnell for Umberger?

Umberger was just bought out, of course people are going to reflect on the trade. I don't see the big deal.

Me neither. Hextall is a great GM. Nearly all of his trades and moves have been great. But that trade was a loss. I don't see the harm in acknowledging reality.

Hartnell wasn't pushing the needle to get this team any further than they got, and with RJ sucking and being injured it let them see some other guys play. Plus like someone else said, we don't have either contract anymore, which was the end goal. Hartnell wasn't getting them out of the first round this past year.
