You never have to pass me on the right. I'm in the center lane, which means I'm not in the left lane, which means you can use that.

Unless someone going the same speed or slower than you is, in which case I'm passing you anyway I can.

In which case they don't belong in the left. Their wrong does not absolve or excuse passing me on the right.

Keep Right doesn't just apply to the far left lane.

I drive 700 miles every other weekend on I-95. The right lane is consistently the fastest simply because of all the choads just chillaxin in the center lane. If you're not passing someone who's in the right hand lane, there's no reason whatsoever for you to be in the center.

So, once again, if I pass you on the right, then you shouldn't be in the center lane. This is so true, that in fact a cop can give you a ticket for impeding traffic in the center lane if there is no one in the right hand lane.

Yes, keep right does only apply to the far left lane. You are incorrect. Read the actual law:

Pennsylvania Vehicle Code, Title 75, Part III, Chapter 33, Paragraph 3313(d) wrote:Except as provided in paragraph (2) and unless otherwise posted, upon all limited access highways having two or more lanes for traffic moving in the same direction, all vehicles shall be driven in the right-hand lanes when available for traffic except when any of the following conditions exist:
When overtaking and passing another vehicle proceeding in the same direction,
When traveling at a speed greater than the traffic flow.
When moving left to allow traffic to merge.
When preparing for a left turn at an intersection, exit or into a private road or driveway when such left turn is legally permitted.

Note the word I have bolded: the Pennsylvania vehicle code specifically states "lanes", not "lane", meaning that vehicles not passing, speeding, moving over to allow for a merge, or turning may travel in any lane outside of the left lane, or passing lane.

PA's law is new. In NJ and MD you can get a ticket. The State Trooper who is my roommate gives out a few a month.

You can get a ticket in PA too, but for the left lane only, as the law clearly indicates. Again, I don't need to be passing to be in the center. And if I am in the center, there's no reason to pass me on the right. If it's not available, then pull that guy over who's clogging up the left, which is breaking the law. But don't pass me on the right.

I don't even know how that's enforceable, frankly. I mean, is there some sort of time limit on being in the left lane before you have to move back? Or if you're passing people, aren't you 99% likely to be speeding already, a way-more-obvious and way more easy to enforce offense?

The way I see it, "keep right, pass left" laws are logically inconsistent and at odds with speed limit laws. If you get pulled over for the former, then I don't see any circumstances where the cop isn't ignoring others around you guilty of the latter.

Theoretical example: you're riding on the Blue Route (speed limit: 55) at about 60 M.P.H. People tailgate you, then pass you on the right at 65 to 70 M.P.H. If you pass a speed trap, you're all already speeding; can you really be impeding traffic if you're speeding? And if you are, doesn't that effectively mean that "keep right, pass left" trumps speeding as an offense?

You morons have some sort of clue about how dangerous this is right? I tried to come up with some sort of non-TOS violation term for people who would risk their lives and others for their own selfish convenience, but failed.

Pass in the passing lane. If it's blocked then wait a freaking minute.

Then please ask all the freaking morons who are in the passing lane but not going with the flow of traffic around them to GET OUT OF THE DAMN WAY

You know what's dangerous? Anyone getting on the expressway/freeway whatever the frack you want to call it and being in ANY lane driving 40 miles an hour or less...

i'm curious how it is more dangerous to pass on the right than it is on the left. as long as the passer uses a turn signal and makes sure there is enough room to make the pass, what's the difference?

I can think of at least two reasons, but there are probably others--first, a driver in the center lane who wants to move into the right lane is much less likely to see you speeding up from behind. Second, if you're trying to pass, you make exiting and entering the free much more difficult.

When changing lanes aren't you supposed to make sure there aren't any cars there? That's how I roll, literally (bahaha!) I drive 100 miles of interstate a day during rush-hour, I do what I gotta do. I'm not gonna pass someone on the right if there is a left lane available, but if someone's being stupid and driving way to slow for conditions and doesn't get over in a reasonable amount of time, they're getting passed on the right.

Wow, that bank robbery/FBI agent murder happened right next to my usual bar. That's some craziness. I went to community college right there to. Our baby doc is right there too. News said it was the first FBI agent ever killed in NJ and the first FBI agent since 9/11 to lose his life. Horribly sad.
