Delta's flight tracker is pretty sweet. One question, though: if a plane that you're tracking is supposed to be going from Boise to Salt Lake, why would it ever be facing northwest?

Circling the airport, taking off depending on the runway orientation, coming in on final approach, depending on runway orientation. Probably a whole other host of reasons.

Sure. Any of that would make sense, if the plane was near either the Boise or Salt Lake airports. Except at the point that I checked it, it was almost exactly in between them. Shouldn't have said "why would it ever" but "why would it be facing northwest in the middle of the flight".

It probably vectored NW. Planes never fly in direct route. Depending in the traffic at the ZLC ARTCC, it was probably routed to a different airway or sector. It also depends on the gate and current configuration of the destination airport. If SLC was using a north configuration then the aircraft from Boise would have to vector NW. SLC only lands North/South.

Since Boise and SLC share the same ARTCC (Center Controllers), arrivals from Boise were probably assigned to a specific arrival gate to accommodate the current active runways (not an airport gate) that needed a NW turn.

Also, since SLC uses a system called time-based metering, they'll have aircrafts make random turns to eat up time. If the plane is ahead of its scheduled time of arrival and sometimes its ETA, the controllers will start vectoring the aircraft to kill some time.

The on-line flight trackers get their data from the FAA's host system, so its fairly accurate.

I designed a good amount of the software that controls the arrival flights into SLC.

Don't worry, I gave my 2-weeks notice on Friday. Everything that I've screwed up in the last six years will be screwed up much worse in the coming months.

"controls" is a bad word. It's more like a guidance tool. But, Centers that use the tool have significantly increased the arrival capacity and have greatly decreased the amount or delays that are caused by in-flight air traffic and capacity issues.

Needless to say, Philly is not one of these places ... yet. But once its fully implemented in the next few years, hopefully the current way of controlling air traffic by using "miles-in-trail" will be gone. The Miles system is pretty much the cause of most delays not related to weather. Pretty much, one a plane is in the air, the pilot is told to just follow the plane in front of him at a certain distance, which is highly inefficient.
