Haven't waded through it yet, but New York Times Sunday Magazine has a long article by Bruce Schoenfeld (who I'm meh about) on Statcast and its effects on measurement of defensive ability.

Odd. Seemed like everyone but Dee Gordon and Stanton's corpse did better this year. And Gordon's pretty easy to explain.

For the barves

“They may think I’m going to blast people, but I’m not,’’ said Stewart, who already had dozens of clubs and sports agencies reach out to him. “It is what it is. It’s that side of the business. To be honest with you, I’m kind of relieved.

“Quite frankly, I’ve got better things to do.’’

He's got better things to do than further ruin a franchise.

If Barry was his old, disagreeable self... one might put up with that for a guy who is a perennial MVP candidate, but for your hitting coach? Nah.

EDIT: sounds like it was partially that, and for good measure the Marlins team hitting was less than inspiring: http://nypost.com/2016/10/03/don-mattin ... s-anymore/

Sounds more like he clashed with Mattingly, not the players.

Outside of their middle infield everyone in their lineup had an ops+ of 109 or higher.

Barves interviewed Snitker and 3 assistants and are also considering Bud Black and Ron Washington

I can understand Bonds not getting along with Mattingly since Bonds is smart at baseball and Mattingly is an idiot. Mattingly probably got sick of being called out on all his awful decisions, and Bonds got sick of working under an incompetent loser.

Yelich went from a good young player to a great young player, and credits Bonds (and the other hitting coach, Menechino I think) for a totally changed approach.

Dude's 24, and hit .298 / .376 / .483, with 38 doubles and 21 homers, after hitting a total of 20 homers in 2.5 seasons prior. Part of that is age development, of course.

Whatever, Mattingly didn't like him, which makes me kind of want him here.

1. Can you imagine Bonds coaching on a team that employs Larry Bowa?
2. Superstars rarely make effective coaches.
3. Kruk's available. He knows a lot about getting on base.
