The future is Nola-nger so far away: Phillies thoughts

Wait...that's NOT a picture of David Bell?!?!

Actually, I agree 100% with phorever about the hows and whys it went down the way that it did and that Bell should never have been signed.

I still say that it was Polanco that blocked Utley. Just because the Phils didn't have the where-with-all to bench Bell and move Polanco to 3rd doesn't take the onus of being the blocker off of his shoulders. Utley had 1 position (ssshhhh...don't tell the Dodgers) and Placido was playing it.

That's just semantics, though.

1) They moved Polanco to 3B, called up Utley, and benched Bell
2) Thome didn't play hurt for most of 2005, keeping Howard in the minors

In 2005, the Phils finished 1 GB of YOUSTON for the WC. Thome played 59 games at 0.2 WAR (.712 OPS). Howard played just 88 and accumulated 3.1 WAR (.924 OPS).

If there were the 2 WC system in place back then, the Phillies would've won the 2nd WC twice in that span I think. Ed Wade and Larry Bowa might've not been fired and who knows if the success of the latter part of the decade happens at all.

2006 - would've won the 2nd wildcard and visited LA, with the winner getting the 97-win Mets
2005 - would've won the 2nd wildcard and visited Houston, with the winner getting the 100-win Cardinals

Both of those seasons were under Charlie. Bowa had the surprising turnaround season in 01, they fell back to average in 02, battled and fell to the Marlins in 03 then finished 10 games back of ATL and 5th in the WC race in 04 and Bowa had run his course, so they made the change early and let Varsho coach that last weekend

Mack said today he thinks Maik will play in the Marlins series (I guess he really wants that suit from Frenchy!), and he wouldn't be against Williams and/or Thompson joining the main club next year
