Yes, continue to draft defensemen until you have proven NHL guys. Sure, those guys they have now have potential, but some of them could turn out to be busts as well or not live up to expectations.

Good, young cheap d-men are always in demand, if they wind up with a surplus of them wouldn't it be fairly easy to trade them for quality forwards?

My $0.02: Just draft best avilable, even if it's a defenseman again.

Need should never come in to play in sports with well developed minor league systems (NHL and MLB): you can always trade one of your surplus players for an immediate need down the pipe. Plus good defensemen are historically much harder to acquire than forwards.

Hextall specifically drafted Sanheim, who is one of the top prospects in all of the league in just one year.
