Holmgren made good draft picks.

Agreed. I'm always moaning that the Flyers go "off the board' because I admittedly don't know anything. Then a year later the guy they took always seems to have been completely worthy of the selection.
That being said, I'm really happy with what Hextall did last night. Showed good draft awareness to me.

Don't get me wrong, I don't dislike Hextall. I just get tired of the revisionist historians acting like Holmgren was some fool who couldn't tie his shoes without help.
He acquired a lot of good talent and actively tried to plug holes each season. The moves didn't always work out, but the team was in contention until pretty much the last two years when they couldn't get by the Rangers.
The place where I'm hoping to see Hextall shine is in the latter rounds. The flyers have (historically) put little effort into scouting non-first round players and this is especially true in Europe. I don't know if they just think the picks are a bunch of lottery tickets or if waiting four or five years for a guy to make your team is worth not using that to get a veteran player today. There are a few teams who have come up with late-round talent consistently. The kings are one such team. Hopefully that mindset has traveled here with Hextall.
