It's a good deal for both teams, and Pronger may officially retire now as well.

and who cares about that since they let you exceed the cap during the summer anyway?

He ate up most of the amount you can go over. You can go over 10%, which this year is about $7 million. Pronger's hit is about $5 million.

Plus, if they're buying out Gagner, that's huge cap savings.

Did Hextall get a pick back? Incredible

35 and older contract. If they didn't do that you'd just sign a guy for 30 years to spread out the cap hit.

Should obviously be an exception for a legitimate career ending injury though.

Well I think they changed the rule but that was the rule when Pronger's contract happened.

Theres no reason to go over so assuming they needed that 10% allowance for something is wrong.

Buying out Gagner serves no purpose. He has as many years remaining as Grossman.

It's a totally pointless deal and could've just been done for the draft pick.

It certainly is unless they buy him out. Otherwise, they obtained a garbage player and took an additional $200K cap hit.

Has to be a buy out.

That draft pick and unloading one of the many defenseman we have already made it a win. After the buyout, we will have decent cap flexibility too. And summer cap overage flexibility, but hey, it's pointless

Someone walk the board through this. The real savings, assuming a buyout, comes from Pronger being off the books immediately as opposed to needing to wait until the week the season started when added to LTIR. Right? So they can reinvest those "summer savings" immediately, no?

The value is in not having to do gymnastics all summer to make the cap work. You have summer flexibility, which you might use, because you have several big dollar defensemen you're trying to move and might not be able to until after the market dries up and teams realize you need one.

In addition, you don't have to keep playing the LTIR game in-season that they've been playing for three years.

Ok so some added flexibility today, but not an overly impactful trade for a Day 1 of the season cap perspective.

Depends. For one, if they buyout Gagner, it's a few million saved. Regardless, I think it would have been hard for them to spend any real money in free agency.

Here's the thing with LTIR. You can go one of two ways with it.

1) You can get under the cap on day 1, put Pronger on IR, and build up your cap space that way for in-season moves.

2) You can go over the cap on day 1 and basically lose the ability to use LTIR.

Either way, it's not optimal for flexibility. It's not a move where you can point to it and show the tangible results, but it's a lot fewer moving parts at either a low cost (and quite frankly, Gagner is an upgrade over Grossmann anyway) or with cap savings.

I'd buyout Gagner and target Beleskey.

More like 8. Maybe they get him at a little less if they do it this offseason, but yeah, that's gonna be a rough contract.
