I'd ask for Swihart and Owens then settle for either of them plus Manuel Margot and Sean Coyle.

Cole says he wants to win now, and if he gets dealt, he's OK with it, but he doesn't think anything happens until July

You just know that if they wait until July that he'll have a sore elbow. If you can get a decent deal, I'd do it now. not wait for some team to offer their best 3 prospects or something. I'm not saying they should do a bad deal, but an injury to Hamels would be a killer. They could conceivably lose Hamels, Lee, and Doc without getting anything in return. We really need him to stay healthy.

I think one of the keys to this rebuild, one that doesn't get talked about as much just yet, is Lee's health and how effective he looks by mid-June. If some team is desperate, he might fetch more than we get for Hamels. That's another reason to do the Hamels deal now. There may not be two teams with good prospects looking for expensive lefties.

Define "decent," plz. Because it would take a catastrophic injury to Hamels for us to not be able to get what I would consider decent value for him this time next year, or the year after.

If you think there's only one team with good prospects interested in an expensive lefty I'd rather just wait until July. The optimum scenario is getting good value for Lee and retaining Hamels.

He'd basically have a Cliff Lee or Halladay situation happen.

The same Cliff Lee -- who's much older -- MB thinks we might be able to get good prospects for in July?

I'm very open to a winter Hamels deal, I just disagree with his logic there

I think the Phillies would have to pick up the buyout in any Lee deal (more or less because this is just deferred salary since his 1st year salary under this contract was $12.5M). In addition, I'd guess they have to pick up half of whatever remains on his 2015 salary when he's traded.

That makes it a part year rental plus a $15M option. I don't think the return would be even as much as the Red Sox got for Lester under similar circumstances and that's with us paying upwards of $30M of the $37.5M he's currently guaranteed.

OK, maybe I overestimated Lee's worth. I'm just nervous waiting on Hamels given his yearly sore elbow thing. I don't want lingering questions about his health while he's being dealt.

I personally think we need to deal them both to get back the numbers we'll need to fill all the holes we have. Between the two pitchers, I'd like to get back two top prospects and at least two very solid guys. From those guys, you hope for one all-star and two average major leaguers. That will be tough, but that's what I would hope. Fill the other roster spots with guys from the org or maybe one or two from free agency. Then buy the needed pitching, unless we get lucky and produce a bunch ourselves.

I really think these two trades are the key. If one of them isn't healthy, then there's less margin for error elsewhere.

I would say decent means one top prospect, one next tier guy, and a wild card guy from the lower minors. That could be moved around a bit depending on the quality of the next tier guy. Maybe this type of deal isn't available. If that's the case, he should wait. It just makes me nervous given the health thing.

My concern is that there may be only one team needing someone in July who also has the type of prospects we'd like. Trading one now and one later helps mitigate that problem and give us more options.

Cole has more class than most of the people that he works for.

As far as the return on a Lee trade, it probably would be less than what the Red Sox got for Peavey because of the add on year.
