And the Nats don't need to spread a rumor. If they want other teams to know Zimmermann is available, all they have to do is pick up the phone. If the Cubs call the Phils, for example, and say they're about to do a deal for Zimmermann, it looks like a naked negotiating ploy. The rumor mill is the best way for them to get the info out, especially if it's not true.

You're complaining just to complain. If anything, it would be dumb for Amaro to swoop in because of this rumor, or to have rushed to sell Cole before the meetings

Well considering Hamels is an elite lh sp signed at, pretty much, market rates but fewer years, than his fa counterparts. Rube doesn't *have to* deal him now. If the Cubs want to play hard ball and say they are going to get zim for less, then let them. Trading Hamels HAS TO return an elite prospect package, if it doesn't, you don't do it. You hold on to him and try to rework the rest of the roster.

This. There is nothing rube can do about it, so why complain? The only way to stop the Cubs is by giving them Hummus for a bag of balls and then you would be able to legitimately piss and moan.

Right. The more suitors, the better, obviously. But what are we supposed to do about the Cubs bluffing or settling?

Yeah, really. If the cubs can get Zimmerman for one of their prospects instead of two or three, good for them. That's not the position the phillies are in with Hamels.

It's almost as if you take this stuff personally, my friend. Nothing any of us says or does is going to change anything. It's just fun to speculate about the machinations of the Hot Stove market. It's what we do here.

FWIW, I doubt Hamels gets traded no matter what the rumors are. I'd be surprised if the Cubs or anyone offered enough for it to make sense. And that's fine by me. Who wants to trade him for pennies on the dollar?

Again, what would you have done to prevent other teams from talking to one another? (Which would have been negligent on their part.)

We firesaling Cole now?

I didn't say we should do anything about it. We can't control other teams. I'm just saying that Rube is out of his league. These guys are manipulating markets and Rube can't even decide on a strategy.

To be fair, you said that the Cubs were playing him like a fiddle. That statement would suggest that you believe Rube is not aware of the Cubs' likely involvement in those rumors and the ramifications of the rumors... and that Rube would rush to a poor decision because of that. Otherwise, he's not getting "played" but instead it's just that the Cubs are making a smart leverage move.

Smug on Cole: "Frankly, I'm not dying to move him."

Smug on Kendrick: GTFO and don't come back (paraphrasing)

I hope some team signs Kendrick because I wouldn't put it past Amaro to give him a spring training invite if he's still a free agent.

you're terrible at posturing, Rube

i don't think we can re-sign him until after 5/1, unless they changed that rule

I found Rube's analysis of the Dom Brown situation the other day heartening. Then he answers a question about Franco's and Altherr's fall success by citing their RBIs, and we're back

Orioles have offered SP A.J. Burnett a deal, though nothing is close there. Baltimore definitely in market for starting pitching.

Cole Hamels would 'love to be traded,' reporter claims

From Bob Nightengale of USA Today at the GM meetings in Phoenix:

"Hamels knows he can’t say a word. Yet, if his world could possibly be a little more perfect, he’d love to be traded this winter."
