First base, center field, starting pitcher. That's where you start. That's not going to be easy considering the Phillies already have $127 million committed to just nine players next season. Is there room to go after a Max Scherzer or Pablo Sandoval or James Shields? Maybe there is, especially with a back-loaded contract, as the Phillies have $76 million in commitments for 2016 and $34 million in 2017, so there's flexibility down the road.

Trouble is that by then, Utley, Rollins, Lee and Papelbon will be gone or too old. Leaving Cole Hamels. Last man standing.

thought that was a little unfair with amaro in the sense that he was going to "fall" for Howard's 100 rbi while in the next breath acknowledging that the phillies were considering releasing him outright.

Anyway, I sort of buy into the strategy of letting Howard finish the season. While I doubt any/many front offices are going to believe he's anything special, I do believe you can convince fan bases of the same and so if I was an Astros type organization (not them due to Singleton), I'd be willing to spend 2-3 million each of the next two years on him.

i can't believe rube put those clauses in their contracts that not only would we retire their numbers, but also their position in the lineup

it may not feel like it, but the phils are on pace to score 18 more runs than last year while giving up 35 less, good for a 7 win improvement in their pythagorean record. they are only on pace to improve their actual record by a win or two, mostly because they were pretty lucky last year in the close games.

He (Gillick) does not anticipate sweeping changes, and reaffirmed the status of both Ruben Amaro Jr. and Ryne Sandberg for 2015. They "absolutely" will stay in their current positions, Gillick said.

"They're under contract," Gillick said. "Ruben is under contract through '15 and Ryne's under contract. ... So right now there's no thought whatsoever of replacing either one."

Full Q&A

Q. So Amaro and Sandberg are absolutely in place for next season?

A. They’re under contract. Ruben is under contract through ‘15 and Ryne’s under contract (through 2016). So right now there’s no thought whatsoever of replacing either one.

Gillick has final say on baseball matters, too

I liked the last line about "creativity." Could mean a Cole deal, but I hope it means going all in on Yasmani

Very interesting. I don't think Montgomery is coming back. Gillick seems to indicate this is his show now.

To me, the Phillies don't make the move to name him president unless Gillick is a long-term option (6 months, up to a year, maybe more). I don't know if we'll ever see Montgomery back.

I hope they have a plan (and that he is lying and he plans to fire Amaro). Apathy is a terrible thing.
