Dunno if this was posted yet...

"I come from making the All-Star team last year to platooning and playing every second or third day," Brown told The News Journal. "It's definitely different. I just wish I could be in there every day. I don't know if they've got a different plan or what. I know they want to see other guys, which is fine with me."

Brown said he doesn't know what else he needs to do win back his full-time job in left field. He was told coming into the season he would be the everyday guy in left field, which happened for three months until his struggles emerged and the outfield became more crowded with the signing of Grady Sizemore in June. Brown has said previously that he has a good relationship with Sandberg dating to their time together in the minor leagues.

When asked if he had talked to Sandberg about what he needs to do to play every day, Brown suggested Sandberg isn't the one making decisions about the Phillies' lineup.

"I don't necessarily think that it's up to Ryno, you know what I mean?" Brown said. "He's just the manager. It's whatever the guys up top [in the front office] have in store, what their plans are. We'll see."

Statistically, Brown is enduring his worst season since he was a 22-year-old rookie in 2010. He hasn't been able to recapture the success he found last year when he delivered career highs in every relevant category, including home runs (27), RBIs (83) and batting average (.272), as part of his first and thus far only All-Star season.

Brown, 26, believes the only difference between the hitter he was last year and the hitter he is this year has been a bad month in May when he hit .146 and a lack of consistent at-bats. Brown added that the decrease in his power numbers – eight home runs and a slugging percentage that is nearly .150 lower than last year – can also be linked to fewer reps at the plate.

Good lord. Someone please send him the breakdown from earlier in this thread with Dom's playing time. He's delusional. His numbers have gone UP since he became more of a platoon player.

Brown's going to be a great case for or against the efficacy of Phillies coaching and development at the major league level.

This team sucks, and they're going to suck for awhile. Getting the absolute most out of whatever they have should be the top priority. We've already seen Dom flounder through a couple partial seasons, absolutely explode for a couple months, fail to sustain it and flounder again. His defense actually has gotten worse, and there's a strong case to be made that the one guy who got through to him, Joyner, was the one they parted ways with.

I think he's gone this offseason. If he goes somewhere else and re-emerges as a solid contributor, or better, that's really damning.

An overlooked factor to the great run was that pretty much every homegrown guy other than Hamels exceeded expectations after reaching the big leagues, as did some of the cheap acquisitions. I don't know if it was Manuel's genius as a hitting coach or what, but Utley and Howard especially were much better than most thought they'd be. Same with Victorino, who had been a multiple Rule 5 guy, and Werth. They didn't arrive as stars. Given the known holes in Franco's game and the likelihood that whoever they add this winter will be flawed too, this matters a lot.

I could see him regaining some plate discipline on another team, but I think his swing is too fundamentally flawed for sustained success. The great month last year was hacking at middle-in fastballs that he doesn't see anymore.

I agree. He's very mechanical and not a fluid athlete at all. Plus it seems like his head is up his ass. I'd be ok for another looksy at him but I'm also very ok to see him go.

I agree on stashing him at Lehigh, which I'm sure Boras would love

Brown's balance at the plate is just awful. Is that how he hits off a tee, too? It's not surprising that he's ranked 250th (out of 288) in MLB in flyball distance (sandwiched between Adam Eaton and Dioner Navarro).

I was looking through old Brown swing videos, and you can see how much more he leans back in 2013 onward (11 second mark) than before (2:19 mark). If you found a 2014 video, it would likely look even worse than the 2013 video I found.

good stuff. it's something we all noticed but this really blatantly shows how much he's changed. i'm not sure if this was HIS doing or the coaching staff??? either way, it's obviously not working.

That flyball distance thing is sweet.

I doubt Boras really spends much time thinking about Brown.

On a national broadcast about a month ago, one of the color analysts, perhaps Rick Sutcliffe, said it succinctly when he said that Brown just doesn't have baseball instincts. The game adjusts to the performance of players all of the time and he doesn't do/ is incapable of doing that. He should have taken the football schollie to Florida instead of playing this game.
Sadly, the Phillies who love "tools" thought that they could make a player out of him just like with Jackson, Hewitt, Golson, L. Greene and others. Won't happen. Lets not forget that he's 27 years old now. He is what he is.

I don't doubt werthless is right when he talks about this balance thing, but I don't see it. At 2:19 in the clip, what do you mean he's leaning back? When he actually makes contact he's pretty forward no? Certainly at the same level as :11 in the first clip.

I think we're too quick to dismiss the several different markers that show Brown is capable/knows how to hit. I saw ashton mention that it was obvious that he wasn't great even in the minors. Bullshit. He's not the same thing as Anthony Hewitt, he's just not.

There's something there. I'm reasonably sure the Phillies/Brown are not capable of unlocking it, so whatever. But I'd rather mess around with him than most of the retreads.

Ben Revere is 288th out of 288. Chooch is 270th. Asche 245. Utley 201. Rollins 168. Byrd 62. Howard 90.

That's not a fun set of stats.

I agree that we shouldn't give up on Brown, because I think his swing has changed for the worse (sapping his power). I only pretend to be a hitting instructor on the internet, but but my perception is that his weight transfer in the follow-through has leaked into his swing. It's probably more like 2:18 in that clip. And yes, my comment was that he was better balanced in that clip than at :11 in the recent clip.

It wouldn't surprise me if that change was to compensate for his higher hands, enabling him to to clear his hands on the inside pitch.

I'm joking about how he hits off the tee, because if he used his game swing on a tee it would look ridiculous.

Winkelman notes that if Cliff Lee had duplicated his 2013 this year, per WAR, we'd be three games out of the second wild card. A replacement-level LF gets you within one.
