I tend to go by 2 full seasons at the ML level before I lift the prospect label, purely because even real successful rookie season means little when things can change drastically the next year when teams have film on you etc etc.

Before the 2010 season, Trout was considered the Angels' third best prospect and 85th in all of baseball by Baseball America.

To be fair, after that year ESPN rated him their #1 prospect. But he was still far from a sure thing. Confirmation bias is a fickle broad.

Trout was drafted in 2009, so before the 2010 season, he was less than a year removed from high school. For a guy drafted in the late 1st round, being ranked 85th the winter after being drafted out of high school is pretty damn impressive.

From This

"Right now, we're trying to win as many games as possible," Amaro said. "At the same time, at some point, we're going to have to start looking to the future. And once we're 'eliminated' … listen, is it a long shot to get back into this Wild Card race? It is. Numerically it's not impossible, but right now obviously I'd be foolish to say it's something that's probable.

"And at some point, we may be looking more at what we have to do for 2015 as far as what's going on, on the field. But until then, we'll make the decision when it's the appropriate time, when it's time to start to looking to 2015 and beyond. We're not quite there yet."

To top it off:

The Cardinals are on pace to win the second NL Wild Card spot with 86 wins. The Phillies (53-68) would need to finish 33-8 (.805) to win 86 games.

The fact that he even mentions the Wild Card is an insult to any fan's intelligence. What a buffoon.

The more significant point is that he sets up a false choice between simultaneous planning both short-term and long-term. But it's all double-talk anyway. He doesn't have a plan and, even if he did, he's not going to talk about it publicly. He's a dead man walking and talking.

I can't wait until we get the broad with the two cell phones to be the next GM. The contrast will be the best. From worst to first. Big advantage.
Teams lie, sometimes for good reasons, sometimes for bad. They do it to get an advantage while they look at the trade market or just because they can

"Overall, the biggest plan is to make sure we improve offensively and with our pitching overall," Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said Wednesday afternoon at Angel Stadium. "You win baseball games with pitching and defense, but I think it's clear that we're not offensive enough a club. We haven't been performing offensively enough to be able to be a contending team right now.

I think they're offensive enough.

Wwry wasn't around then.

Building a team based on starting pitching is dicey. It works sometimes. But it fails a lot too (If you consider not winning the WFS a failure). FFS they won the WFS with a pretty dicey staff. Then they went starting pitching mad and returned to the WFS and had a record winning season.

Amaro was pretty awesome for a short period. But once Oswalt and Halladay went down, he became completely clueless.

Completely clueless is a pretty bad quality in a GM.

The Phils really need Kim.

If Montgomery retires, who replaces him? I see David Buck is at the top of the front office list after Amaro. Is that one of the owner's sons? Anyone know anything about him?

I bet he owns one of those knives. The Best. I had one. Lost it over the years. Probably a good thing.
