Wichita State commit

Austin Davis, lhp, Cal State Bakersfield (No. 83): A true sleeper, Davis posted a 6.49 ERA as a freshman in 2012 and redshirted in 2013. But the 6-foot-5, 240-pound lefthander showed 91-94 mph heat this fall, along with a promising 79-81 slurve and good feel for a high-70s changeup with fade. His delivery has some rigidity, and he has a lot to prove, but he is ticketed for a slot in Cal State Bakersfield’s weekend rotation this spring. If he succeeds, he could shoot up draft boards, because hulking lefties with his arm strength are tough to find.

Maybe he'll sign for slot since he's not hurting for money with all these no-show construction jobs at the Newark esplanade

Today was a great day to say the least.
"My trainer had the phone in his pocket when I got the call. He was trying to get the phone out of his pocket and he couldn't get it out. It was actually kind of a fiasco. But then I answered the phone and they let me know I was going to be a Phillie. I had to go back to doing my lifts. There wasn't a whole lot of emotion but it was cool once we gone done. We all hugged out there and then went home and met up with my mom."

Davis, whose fastball tops out in the mid-90s, said he was excited about being drafted but disappointed that he wasn't selected a little bit earlier.
"I was expecting to go yesterday but going into today I was excited to get picked early instead of having to sit around and wait, so that was cool."
A red-shirt sophomore this past season, Davis has the option of signing with the Phillies or returning to play at CSUB.
"I haven't made up my mind 100-percent. I have some ideas but I still have to talk my family and my advisor and stuff. That will come in the next couple of days."
Murray committed to South Carolina before his junior baseball season, and he said he'll talk with his family before making a final decision about his future.
"There's a good chance I'll honor my commitment to South Carolina. I'll talk it over with my family and we'll decide. It's an incredible accomplishment for myself. I've set goals my whole life to make it to this day, it's an unbelievable feeling."
"I didn't even know they were following me. It's a great honor."
Flacco, who has a football scholarship offer from Western Michigan, said he was likely to "play football" but didn't want to rule out signing with the Phillies until he had more discussions with the organization.
Harris expected to be drafted on Friday in the first 10 rounds. “I talked to just about everybody and they all had me in the top 10.....it just didn’t work out. When it happened today I was just speechless. But there is a little added fire, and I am going to prove all of these teams wrong that passed me up earlier. I’m going to show them they got a great player.”
Harris expects to sign his contract after a physical. He said scouts in the Phillies organization considered him a player with "high work ethic", one who "flirted" with five tools.
“Derek had an opportunity to sign last year [with the Cubs], and he came back,” said head coach David Esquer. “I think he’s ready. I know he had the opportunity to sign, but I remember, I told Derek, 'I'm not going to talk you out of signing; that's not my job, but I'd like to see you play healthy, and I almost feel cheated: I didn't get a year of being able to coach you,' because he was injured last year and didn't get a full season. He's a great personality, and a player I'm going to miss."
