One (admittedly unfalsifiable) way to view it would be possible new impact of analytics dept stats guys. Roob already stated he looked at Fausto because of advanced states rec (big ERA - xFIP gap last year). It seems like the A's of the world are all about college guys in draft with good K/BB for hitters (Sacto State guy fits this, though not Pepperdine guy)

the other way to look at it is they're getting advanced players because they need help at the major league level ASAP to save their jobs.

My view is they are looking for guys with a lower ceiling but higher floor because they need depth. Look at Clearwater and see what happens when you overdraft cheap college Seniors to save money for toolsy lottery picks. I mean David Buchanan was our best option for a #6 starter. Our #7 was signing Jason Marquis!

That's a good point re: the college seniors plus lotto tickets in past drafts. Thought they got a little snakebit with Morgan and Pettibone, could have helped pitching depth now

Lawrence:

Six of the eight players the Phillies drafted Friday were at least 21 years old, meaning they could move quicker through the farm system than the usual array of high-ceiling high schoolers the team has chosen more regularly in the last decade.

Wolever: "It was a coincidence - it certainly wasn’t planned that way - but we’re pleased with the way it went."
.
.
"I think if [Brown] stayed on the mound he could be a back-of-the-rotation starter. In center, he’s an above average center fielder with a good bat."
.
.
"[Hockenberry] came and worked out for us and threw very well in front of a bunch of us. Outstanding young man. But more importantly all of his stuff was above average. We thought he was the best choice we could make."

The Times-Picayune article on Nola getting drafted
The Advocate article on Nola getting drafted

About a minute before the announcement on television, Nola received a text message from his draft advisor. "Congratulations, you’re a Philly."

The Tribune (San Luis Obispo) article on Imhof getting drafted

Though he had spoken with team representatives this year, Imhof said he hadn’t considered Philadelphia among the short list of teams coveting him since he hadn’t heard from the organization recently. But he chalked it all up to the cloak and dagger games of the draft. "I’m just so thankful for the opportunity to play professional baseball. I knew I was going to go somewhere. It happened to be the Phillies and I’m just glad it happened."

Los Angeles Times article on Brown

In a game of specialization, Aaron Brown is a throwback, the guy who can pick up a basketball and know how to shoot it, pick up a football and know how to throw it, and pick up a dart and know how to aim it. Someone who can run a 6.4 60-yard dash, throw a 93 mph fastball and hit a baseball more than 400 feet. A well of natural athleticism dipped with a wild amount of competitiveness, Brown is the athlete other athletes dream of becoming.
.
.
Before the draft, Brown said that he expected to sign, but scouts seemed to be split about whether to use him as a pitcher or outfielder. "I'm very aggressive at the plate and outfield, and I love playing every day. So if it were my choice, I would say, 'Yeah, give me a shot at the outfield and let me see what happens.' But you know what? I love doing both, so whatever they chose for me, that's what I'm going to do and I'm going to give it my best."

ArkansasRazorbacks.com article on Oliver getting drafted (w/ PDF of quotes)

“I knew from the mistake I made that I would slide a little bit, but I was fortunate enough to reach terms with the Phillies and after we had that locked in it was pretty emotional. I’m excited for the opportunity to be with the Phillies and keep chasing my dreams.”
.
.
“I know Nola is a heck of a pitcher and he has been consistently great. It’s an honor to be in the same organization with him and hopefully one day when we both reach the big leagues we can be a power duo in Philadelphia.”

Montgomery Advertiser article on Marrero getting drafted

"Today is a very special day for me. Thanks to God, my family, my teammates and coach (Mervyl) Melendez for believing in me. I'm a Hornet for life."

The Tennesseean article on McWilliams getting drafted

McWilliams had talked with scouts from other clubs, but admitted that the Phillies weren’t one of the ones that had shown the most interest.

"Actually, it was one of the teams that I’d had the least amount of contact with. I was kind of surprised. They called this morning, and I talked to them all day. I’m not going to complain about anything."

McWilliams said he will sign with the Phillies and leave to join their minor league camp soon.

"Now, my job is just baseball. I can’t really put it into words."

Should I be concerned that our staff didn't really reach out to two of our picks prior to the draft? Is that normal?
