I'm not sure how you can possibly make that type of sweeping statement. 16 of the first 25 3rd round picks were college juniors.

Obviously that is not based on this pick alone. But please identify a single instance you can recall where the Phillies figured and exploited something relating to resource allocation.

We're not talking about other things. We're talking about that statement's relevance to that pick.

Huh... that pick is one more piece of evidence in support of the general statement.

Because our recent track record with HS draftees has been so impressive?

I'll admit I'd like a few HS guys in the last 6 picks today. But its hard to argue that we didn't get good value for our pitching picks. Brown's 8 walks in 232 ABs this season is a little disconcerting to me.

In what way? A college junior might go back to school, and maybe the Phils don't like next year's draft class as much to put much value in a 3rd round comp pick. And maybe they are really high on Oliver anyway. We can't possibly know enough to evaluate the decision on that level.

And as I pointed out, all but nine teams drafted college juniors. So were they all stupid too?

I just asked PP why it's a bad thing that they're going in a different direction this year given the lack of HS development over the past 5+ years (Biddle excluded) and the fact that dozens of kids are sitting in Clearwater waiting for Williamsport and GCL to start because the Lakewood kids aren't ready for Clearwater yet

Have a lot of young, high upside guys in the low minors. Not really concerned they've gone 3/4 in pitching. Really needed that infusion.

Rd 5 = Rhys Hoskins, Sacramento State, 1B

Sacramento State has had one first-round pick in its history: Tim Wheeler, back in 2009. While Hoskins won't beat Wheeler's record of being taken No. 32 overall, the first baseman put together a strong junior season that helped his Draft stock considerably. Hoskins' calling card is his power. Big and strong, he's shown the ability to hit the ball out, finishing among the Cape Cod League leaders in home runs last summer. There can be a little length to his swing, and he tends to be a pull hitter, sometimes to a fault. Hoskins isn't a runner and has played first base at Sacramento State the past two years, though he played an outfield corner as a freshman and on the Cape. Regardless of where he plays defensively, the team that takes him in the first five rounds will be buying his bat and the power potential it brings with it.

There is literally no justification for not putting much value in a 3rd round comp pick. At the absolute worst, you take a college senior and use the extra money elsewhere. I'm sure the majority of other teams had already taken high school players as opposed to us where our first two picks are rumored to be signable for slot or slightly below. I'd much rather use our last protected pick to take a stab at a hard sign high school player over a college outfielder with a 4% walk rate and a 25% strikeout rate.

I really like this pick. Power and plate discipline (38BB/31K). Interesting we've taken all college juniors.

We're also not really saving any money on these picks so the idea of overpaying for a premium high school talent is vanishing quickly.
